As Bachmann introduces revised models, they substitute the new diagrams and delete the old ones.

An hour or two of running is usually enough to break-in most locomotives. Some benefit from more.

You had the right idea about cleaning the track. You say you used rubbing alcohol. That usually contains some oil which could have allowed dirt to build up on the track and wheels. That would hamper electrical pick-up. Use plain isopropyl alcohol 70% or higher concentration. Clean the track and the wheels again and your problems should disappear.

Even if you used alcohol with no additives the first time, it is possible the track became contaminated afterward. New locomotives often arrive from the factory over-lubricated. Running the locomotive causes oil to get spread over the track and wheel treads. Dirt is attracted and there goes your electrical continuity.

Clean again and let us know if you still have trouble. Hopefully this is helpful and solves your problem.

Regarding the split gears on the PLUS F-7:
Before the SPECTRUM and Intermountain F-7s became available, I bought the PLUS F-7s and replaced the cracked gears with NWSL wheelsets. While that restored them to operation, I would not recommend that approach.

The NWSL gears are expensive and the PLUS F-7s draw high current and do not run well. It does not make economic sense.

Some people say they have been able to repair the cracked gears. They do this by removing the gears, glueing the crack while the crack is squeezed closed, then reaming the hole slightly for a snug fit to the shaft. (The gears shrink on the axle causing the split, so the hole is undersized when you glue the crack shut)

Maybe this will help.

Both Intermountain and Micro-Trains have produced the FT locomotive in NYC schemes. Bachmann isn't likely to enter the market as a third producer when sales of the two earlier models were disappointing due to the duplication.

As for the F2 - it was kind of an interim offering. I don't think many railroads got any. The NYC rostered only two. It would be something different to have. So far the manufacturers have all skipped over this model. It is not likely to get produced. Why not try kitbashing one?

I wonder where all the old parts went. There used to be places like AK-SAR-BEN (Nebraska spelled backward) that used to list and sell parts for all the early N scale locomotives. They went out of that business long ago. They continued in business doing custom paint schemes on stock locomotives and cars. I'm not sure they are still in business. If you could contact someone who was associated with the business, they might know how they disposed of their parts inventory. I think they were located in Lincoln, Nebraska. Maybe a local hobby shop got the parts.
Probably buying up complete locomotives (eBay or train shows) is going to be your most reliable source for parts these days.
