Thanks for all the websites for weathering! I just tried something I made up. I tried using flour on my car. It works pretty well. :)

Whatever you do, don't bake it or your weathering may cake onto the car.

Oh, bad pun, Roger......... :o :o :o

I'll echo what others have said about the PFM/United locos. I had DCC put into one of their PRR L-1 2-8-2's, which was smooth running to beign with, but it develops an intermittent short in spots, one of those that wouldn't have been evident on DC.

Good find and good luck with the project.

I'll add Penn Central 9999 (ex-PRR 9353) to the list.  It made it through to Conrail on the Union Transportation shortline in New Jersey. (and I believe replaced the last Pennsy steamer in service)

Yes it did. Replaced a B-6 0-6-0 switcher.

On the subject of the 44 tonner, I'd like to see the NH done in the as-delivered paint scheme of Hunter Green and Warm Orange, with the hooded headlights.

On my NCE system, F3 is either on or off, unless the function refresh for F3 is on in the system. Probably a function of the system.

Don't pass up a deal just because of what's been said here......

True, the C&BT kits were what they were for when they were made (I bought one in 1985). But, with a few detail parts from DA or DW, the ugly duckling can be turned into a beautiful swan. I've seen you work on turning a stock locomotive into something uniquely IC, so a freight car is not that far of a stretch for someone with your skill level......

HO / Re: Trouble with conrail DCC

Proto 2000 made quite a few locomotives in Conrail paint schemes. The easiest to convert to DCC would be the GP30, the SD50 and the SD60. As related by Jim, these fall into the category of only requiring a few tools, in this case, a set of small screwdrivers. Remove the shell, remove the existing circuit board, pop in the decoder (a Digitrax DH163LO, which does not require changing out the bulbs) and you're done except for programming it with its own address.

If you can find them, the SW series (8/600/9/1200) requires a little more work and soldering skills.

AMEN! Taking the time to wire properly up front allows us to enjoy many years of trouble free layout operation.

Just a subtle bump, since I haven't posted in a while.....

Am now married, living in P'Tuh'kt Roe Dyelin(that is how its pronounced), and not managed to join anything train related except the local division of the NMRA, which was more or less a transfer also from the division in NJ.

FiOS has really taken off here. Very busy over the summer, but no OT now, so with that and beign married, the train budget is tight, if not non-existent. Also very little layout time, think its best I wait 'till I get the basement with a house attached.

HO / On the road to Rhode Island...

Well, guys, after the January dissapointment, I did finally get my transfer. I start work at Verizon-RI on April 2nd.
Layout plans? Will probably be joining the PNMRR or Worcester Club to start, after which I might actually start to build my first layout in about 17 years, and as I have discussed with some others, will be my rendition of the Pascoag, RI branch of the NH with SNE featured also. Small, manageable, and possibly with (pardon the pun ), light at the end of the tunnel that is a train.
Hope to catch some of you up there,

Yes, but one need look to the PRR prototype K4 Pacific......granted, the GN had locos with Belpaire fireboxes, but.....
