HO / Re: Wabash Heartige eng

Mr Bachman: received my Wabash unit today and am pleased with the eng as a product. But. the colors are way off! It is definitely green on top of bands, and in my opinion the top band should be a gray close to the bottom band color while the bottom band should be what appears to be a blued off white  Have I gone color blind? The colors of the model match the pics in your ads, but the true color is closer to the proto pic on your parts section for this eng. Check out Wabash Heritage unit in your search eng. Bill

Just pulled up the site I suggested and there are some pics of a mode taken outside in the sunl that looks pretty good. Hope it was a Bachman. Used unit at end instead of eng Bill

I sure hope so. Saw one at my local hobby shop, and being familiar with Wabash colors couldn't figure out where the top color came from. Ordered one any how but decided to pull up a proto pic . When I found a few they all were light gray like the proto pic on the parts page for this engine on the Bachman site. Bill

No, haven't received it yet. Pictures on the web site I purchased it from look like a light greenish gray. The Central of Georgia eng is closer to the Wabash color. Google Wabash Heritage diesel

Mr Bachman: Ordered a Wabash Heritage eng, and the top color is a green instead of gray. I checked the internet pictures and it is gray, and the proto picture on your site for parts shows this eng and it is gray in the photo. Please explain as this is the second Heritage eng I have and was happy with the first one (PRR). This is a beautiful engine with the gray top. Bill

HO / Re: Alco S2 sound improvement simple

Thanks bapguy for the CV values. Called Soundtraxx some time ago with some low sound issues with some of the decoders I was installing and received the info from them on the CV's except for 154, but no values. Was wondering when we could get a site up to play around with the value issues others have found to sound good. Still haven't tackled my EM-1 yet to get the correct Baldwin whistle in it as the S2 was the first install, out of 81 projects, that had lights. Now the fear is gone. Bill

Well guys ,I mentioned this fix some time ago, but it didn't receive the response I expected. The hole enlargement brings the sound level up, but doesn't give the bass tones. After comparing the addition of a TSU 1000 in a RS3 I put sound into, I  replaced the whole system with a TSU 750 and a small oval speaker like the one I used in the RS3. The small oval from Tony,s fits with a little sanding on the sides of the enclosure. The tricky part is to find room for the capacitor . I cantilevered it off the brass mounting strip I used for a heat sink. It sits just in front of the rear light bracket and drops to just clear the top of the gear tower. Cut out the top of the shell for a little clearance which you can not see. Fairly difficult , but well worth the effort. The oval speaker is about four to five times larger than the small round one used. Plenty of room for the modification with no machining required and have a full range decoder. Hope I can find a project for the removed decoder. This engine is a fantastic performer and deserves the largest speaker that will fit. Man does it sound good! Bill

HO / S2 sound volume
January 12, 2014, 05:16:51 AM
Bought a PRR S2 some time ago and was dissapointed that the sound volume was very low even though it was cranked. The horn was especially low. Decided to see if I could replace the speaker and decided to try drilling out the approximately 1/8" hole in the speaker box. Experimented with larger bits and stopped at 1/4," as it didn't need any more volume. Sound about doubled, and now run it with reduced CV's. Very pleased with results. Horn was distorted with old settings, but now is not with lower setting even though it is much louder. Bill

Hi Donaldon: Been busy putting Tsunami's in other equipment and ready to start the EM-1. Before I purchased the TSU 1000 decoder,I have both Heavy and medium steam, I talked with the Soundtrax people. They said I would get the same effect on the medium steam as the heavy by adding re verb, just that it would shift everything. They didn't say it wouldn't work on an articulated engine, but the description on there site doesn't say it's not there. I also was told if I couldn't use it I could get another offering down loaded for 10 bucks. I haven't found anyone else yet with this Baldwin style whistle.  Bill (BLF)

Sorry Joe, just remembered it's a FM from Walthers, and it has I believe a QSI system in it. Will try some of your suggestions as I have quite a few speakers now. Thanks again. Bill

thank you Joe. I have fitted 18 of my diesels with Tsunami products, and like them very much. Are you happy with the sound from that small speaker. I have a Baldwin switcher from another manufacture with a speaker in the same location, and it is barely audible. Bill

Thank you. Does the speaker go in the rear or in the fuel tank area if you know? Thanks again. Bill

Does any one know if the DCC only equipped GP 9s are machined so one could add sound. Are the frames and components like the ones with sound. Bill

Hi guys: I mm back; Couldn't remember my password to answer some of your questions. Ready to resound my EM-1. Decided to use a medium steam decoder from Soundtrax. Before we lost the site on U tube a year ago, I went back and forth between  a site with EM-1 pics that were dubbed with sound tracks from a museum in WI, and the ATSF freight whistle on the medium steam decoder. Both were hooters, and couldn't tell the difference. Then a buddy told me the ATSF engines were built by Baldwin. You can connect the dots for yourself. Will play with re verb to get the heavy steam, sound. By the way, the Spring Mills Depot I-12's are a fantastic caboose for the EM-1s.  Bill

HO / Re: 'Pancake' Motor Brushes

My local hobbyshop salesmen showed me a repair job he did on a N gauge engine by turning down some Athearn brushes and used a coupler spring for tension. It worked like brand new. You got nothing to lose. Bill
