General Discussion / Re: New Steam Loco
August 06, 2008, 01:13:44 AM
Actually this is not quite the first new-build steam locomotive in the Uk for 50 years, as there have been new-builds for narrow-gauge; as per below examples quoted from Wikipedia

Graham Lee, in business with an engineering works situated at Statfold Barn Railway near Tamworth in Staffordshire, has in 2005 and 2006 constructed two new Quarry Hunslet locomotives (named Statfold and Jack Lane) similar in appearance to Irish Mail pictured above. In January 2007 Jack Lane was offered for sale by the manufacturers for £152,750 (Railway Magazine, February 2007). The third of a series of four locomotives is currently under construction.

Whilst checking this on the internet, I saw this youtube link, showing a 1946 Hunslet loco having some trouble with a rake of wagons, and requiring ''human-power''

Did the oil drums change much in their design over the years?

I have some 1/48 scale from a Tamiya WW2 set, and wonder how appropriate they were for before the war.

HO / Re: do ho trains have sound
November 28, 2007, 05:14:54 AM
I drive my children/kids crazy by spelling words in full and punctuating all text/SMS messages on my mobile/cell phone.

However, I work in international banking, and believe me, the money I have seen lost, or at best jeopordised by poor typing/spelling/grammar is incredible.

We forgive slip-ups, we all make them. But spellings can be checked, basic rules followed, and checking before sending undertaken quickly. Otherwise, as Gene illustrated, we have really no idea what we were being asked.

Now, the question is Roger. Is your mis-spelling of ''grammar'' as ''grammer'' a typo ? ;D

On30 / Re: Unitah mallets in On30

Hi Mike

there is a conversion kit for the Mantua HO Mallet to convert to On30, from Backwoods Miniatures. Pictures on the web-site look nice. Not sure how accurate the model is dimensionally.

The company also do a lot of dress-up kits for Bachmann stuff as well.

Dear all

thank you indeed for information to-date, and anything further that may arrive.

Not being based in USA is a limiting factor, although I am travelling back to UK for Christmas with the family so will look up Phoenix Models. My father worked in a coal mine during the 1940's, so I have an on-line resource there as well.

FYI, I am modelling a quarry in 1/36, and some may have seen my previous post looking for information on railway [railroad] wagons used for transporting explosives.

Thanks again

General Discussion / Air Compressors and Pneumatic Drills
November 11, 2007, 08:35:04 PM
Does anyone know where I might find information, and preferably pictures about the Mobile Air Compressors, and associated Pneumatic Drills used in the quarrying and mining industry up until around 1950 ?

Having limited access to resources it would be better if it was available on the internet. So far I have been on Wikipedia etc, and found one picture of each.

Thanks

Shayman

looks v nice. Keep us updated. Did you already tell us about your Shay number 1 ?

I wonder how technically difficult it would be to make a three- truck that can be altered/amended into a two- truck as a designed option. That would increase sales potential dramatically.

The aftermarket already produces a third truck for the Climax, but as the mechanism is hidden, the lack of shaft connectivity is not an issue.

The drive shaft on the Shay is obviously more visible.

On30 / Re: IF YOU WERE BACHMANN'S CFO
November 04, 2007, 01:46:09 AM
Hamish-

correct - a non-tender, i.e. tank loco.

re the WW1 locos you are right, they are 2 foot gauge- As such a much more personal choice- would scale up nicely to 30 inch, but as you say not necessarily fit the Bachmann philosophy- As [imaginary] CFO I wonder if I could change that ?

I did think about the Heisler, partcicularly given the various comments posted on this site.

On a separate issue have you bought any stuff from Ozsteam- looks pretty good stuff on website.

On30 / IF YOU WERE BACHMANN'S CFO
November 03, 2007, 09:15:06 PM
If you were Bachmann what would be your next loco in On30 ? This means your head [profit] has to rule your heart. Which loco would make the most money.?

USA is their largest single market, but their non-US business is developing, and they want to appeal to a wider audience.

Personally, I think a larger non-tender loco is missing from the roster, like a Baldwin 4-6-0 or Alco 2-6-2, which were widespread after WW1.

But probably a 3-truck Shay would please the boss.

So, based on a one loco suggestion it would be the Shay.

What do you guys propose ?

General Discussion / Re: Modeling locations

Stephen- yep, hydrofoil trip to Macao is great. If you went there in 85 then  you may not recognise it today as it resembles Vegas. The Venetian is the latest to open just recently, and apparently Macao is already earning more in gambling revenue than Vegas. We prefer Wynn's- but just for the food, not the tables.

Gene- nope. But I would like to live there. Tsing Yi Isand is the small island between Lantau [where the new airport is] and the New Terrirories mainland.

For those interested - you can view the streetmap location of the Kader H.Q. building, on the same website - www.ypmap.com. Their address is below [n.b. the site is not very user friendly as details have to be 100% correct- no fuzzy logic there !]

  22, Kai Cheung Road,
  Kowloon Bay, Kowloon,

Asian Life, they're still called the New Territories even after China took over?  Wow.  Do all direction instructions still begin "Take the Kowloon Ferry..."?
Gene

Hi Gene

yes still called New Territories - see www.ypmap.com  ........can you spot Tsing Yi island.?

Star Ferry is still working across the harbour from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon. One of the world's ''must-do'' trips, although I usually take the Mass Transit Railway underneath- as I am about to do in 20 minutes - from MongKok [my office] to Central.
