Large / New 3 truck Shay
April 19, 2015, 12:25:11 AM
Just got my new 3 truck Shay Oregon Lumber.  I think some things might be missing.  The instructions diagrams (8.5 by 11 sheets of paper) talk about both a coal and oil bunker, but all I got was the oil.  It also shows 3 different stacks but I only got one.  There was also no color brochure like I have received with all my other Spectrum engines which told about the engine, history, etc.  There is a dvd.  When I got my 'new' second generation Climax, it came with both bunkers and several smoke stacks.  I also did not get an extra drop coupler for matching up to the existing Bachmann side dump and log cars.  My original 2 truck Shay had that.  So the question is, before I even take it out of the box, what accessories should it have come with?

But check with Barry anyways.  Back around the holidays, he was doing another batch of drives.  He does not install. Worth the email.

Pretty sure all 4 pins use springs.  Missing or damaged springs is my guess.

I'm talking about this part:Model: 824XX-G821X-00B01-2 which is actually for the new 3 truck Shay but is very similar on the Climax. I had one prong that had a dead spring in it and would not make good/full contact. A drop of electrical oil and it stopped sticking and started working again. Just a suggestion.

Are the springs in the plungers working?  Maybe try a drop of electrical contact oil.  That setup sounds like the one used on the newer Climax.

As I understand it, and personally experienced on my 2 truck, the plastic literally starts to fall apart, the springs inside overheat and collapse and start doing flaky things. If you want to separate the motor from the rails, it is much easier with the a metal replacements. Everyone seems to say replace and stop messing with the old. I'm taking their advise.

That picture now gives me a perspective I was missing. Wow. Down right puny compared to that other monster.

Wow. Now I'd love to see a big boy done at 1.20!  I guess it would need more than 8' diameter curves. 😱

So just as a matter of curiosity, if you did a standard gauge in 1.20 and set it next to say a 2 truck Shay, which to me is pretty big in handling, carrying, etc., would the Shay look like the 440 compared to the Shay as they are in the 1.20 or would it be even larger in relationship. Just trying to get my mind around just how much bigger standard is compared to narrow.  I know I've seen the old chart that shows them all, but that just doesn't get my mind really comprehending it.

I'm running it with Locolinc so track voltage is always at 18 volts.  It gets its power from the motor connections as I recall, yet it still makes the coal shovel, etc noise when standing still yet I don't have a battery. When I got this new climax, I called them and gave them my setup and they said use the P8.  But now I'm gonna double check wiring because if it gets it power from motor, how does it make standing still noise?  Now I'm really curious.

According to the guy at Phoenix, he said to use the P8.

Large / Climax speaker

I recently got a new version NEW Climax DCC ready.  I added a Phoenix P8 sound board  using the factory speaker and it all sounded great.  After maybe only a half hour or less of running DC, I started hearing the. Sound cut in and out. At first I thought the were dead spots in the rail but noticed the engine seemed to still run.  Then all sound stopped. I assumed a wire came loose or something. So today I started chasing it down, saw no loose wires, so first hooked up another speaker and got sounds.  No loose connections on factory speaker and it looks fine. Is there another way to test it?

So that is on the new or old or both.  I'm confused a bit.  They made a change?

Large / New version Climax and drive shaft

I originally had one of the first generation Climax and became aware of the replacement rear driveshaft with the slip function, which I did. I recently bought one of the newer generation and when working on it today, noticed that the driveshaft was solid, not the slipping style.  Does it need that? Did they solve the binding issue that caused the need for the replacement shaft?
