General Discussion / Re: WHY ?
February 19, 2013, 09:25:06 PM
and alot easier to sycronize locos togather .    there is a loco that uses a big fly wheel and a drive whell rides 90 degrees from that which is transmissioned to the wheels.    the plymouth switcher    youtube it  it was kind of neat dont remember exactly where  its the same concept that ariens uses on there snowblowers

might check and see if the drive shafts are in place  or a wire pulled off to the motor  after you open it.  might be your next step

The package is here   the dcc 2-8-0   Silverton Durango   tender has speaker holes    the PC board seems to be in the way, i can see it through the holes.  also the tender has the female end like sound tenders and the loco with the wires   so this info is  for everyone , im glad i waited  till the DCC version came out.  very nice looking  alot better than the photos of it.   the tender is a bit longer than the 2-10-0 deccapod  i was thinking of changing the bottoms out of the tender  that wont work for me so  ill have to cash some more metals to the recycling yard to add sound.   might try the TCS sound  decoder for this with stay alive.  the paying train travelers like to hear the steam loco as well as to ride it. ;D

HO / Re: Multiple Tracks on Curve
February 17, 2013, 06:51:30 PM
look at what Bachmann has    there largest is 35.5 which matches with 33.3    then theres a 28 and a 26 that match curve,  then the  22 and 18          so you might try even get a larger radius if possiable  which might work out well and alot better than the tighter curves  if your going to buy something look at all options that fits what you like .  options like outer rail frist then inner ones or inner ones then to larger ones   look at both ways when you cross the rails .  i found that you can mix and match   at 35.5 with a 28 then back to a 35.5   or a small straight  so theres alot of options   just play with it until you like how it fits.     the wider the curve the longer the trian   and more realistic .
save your 22 for yard or other places  and stay with the gray roadbed  for the fact its nickle plated track not steel with those mainline runs   i have black road bed here and there with my grey  soon that will go away.

so many different ways to do rails and everyone has great ways of doing them

HO / Re: DDA40X SOUND
February 17, 2013, 05:42:01 PM
What i found with this sound loco    since the speaker is on the bottom it picks up any metal object   like rail nails that went missing installing my track  so those are now cleaned up  thats was my biggist promblem.   ok since you posted this loco  do you like how the sounds work with it .      i sure do, i like starting it up   when i run that era of locos thats the frist one i start  then the FA's.   really makes a layout come to life .  now i just need more sounds on other types of locos. besides my steam ones.   for me the details are just fine for the price of it.

HO / Re: parts for older locos
February 17, 2013, 05:27:44 PM
thats why i have a rail yard museum  some are not worth a cent just decorating peices buy new with dcc installed and play  work on those if needed.   my frist tyco locos are in there beat to death with rails missing  but yet i still remember them.  the yard loco maintenance engineer said they use to much fuel hard to fix and they dont pull much just  scrap them or just display them so the kids in town can play on them.  and order ones that are more updated and save tons of time and money on your railroad.   glad i took advice from him   my loads make it on time and the engineers get to go home on time every night with pride. ;D

General Discussion / Re: ho set recommendation

IM in my mid fifties and not married  yes i have to make time to play.   i have 4 rental homes  a full time job   2 old tractors 2 horses  5 cats and over a acre of land with old barn and one child still  living with me.  i make a evening with my grandson i try once a week to just be young again with him.  he loves my hot wheels track , my erthyl tractors which i have a large selection of and of course my trians my oldest hobby and my newest one.     i think i never grew up.   i do whish i had more time to clean out the hay loft of all my junk and remoldel it for my train layout thats like others on here   someday yes. for now i just keep my upstairs full of track on the old oak flooring.

i have changed out wheelsets on many boxcars   even cleaned out the trucks with a cleanning tool that reams them  for my old tycos /bachmanns.   the most type of cars i own now are Bachmann silver series  cost is right and they look good and the run good.  i found that there passanger cars one of the best  stay on track easy to pull  tighter corners  and even go through switches nice.  thanks to that favoritespot place glad a bought alot of F7s before and now they dont have much of them.     now they come out with F7s with sound hope the same road names i allready have so i can just add a b unit with sound and use the old ones for just parts or ready to change shells if needed.    i worked most of my life a full time hotel engineering job and started 25 years ago and to this day remodeling homes to lease out  just a few more years and they will be payed off.  when that happens i do retire my full time job and have even more knowledge of trains and might even start a repair shop for them.

Rich     when you said runaway     does that mean  why sitting there it moves a few feett at a time with calling it .   i have one loco that does this  and leaves the yard and parks itself on the main .     then you know what happens   lol

Hobby Lobby  is where i got my frist dcc set   got it on sale for around $200  then bought the overland steam engine set  then found out i needed to change it to a dcc unit to run right.         i did not like the the cars  with plastic wheels  and was not impressed there.     but the outcome to come back to the hobby was the best thing for me to quit working all the time  i need to relax and just play.

i would shop around for that decoder    here it is on bachmanns website        http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/products.php?act=viewProd&productId=1464.

some of the hobbyist dont like these decoders  i havent had any troubles with them .   i do like that they are a bit slimer than other brands    and for your loco  it eas a tight fit   unless you go with a  N scale decoder .       when you do this the frame is what powers the motor.   so theres some work involved but well worth it .   i just need to add sound to mine yet  and havent had time to do it.      Dave

Yes it will   theres room above the motor    i used a bachmann type  they are a little thinner  bachamann sells decoders also.   one thing i did was run a pair of track power into the cab and used a small 2 pin connector  for later use if i want sound in the tender and a reverse light .   the overland steamer is a split frame   so some work is needed to do this.     but worth it      Dave

i have several Fa's   with different road names     i change the sound of the horns  so i know which is which.   and one with a b unit with sound i changed it also different than the A unit       CV 115       0,1,2     three different horn sounds.      what i would like  is that when i put on the head light thats when the engine starts it  starting sounds.  or the F8 key   but the headlight says im ready to go to work   just a thought  or maybe it can be done this way im not sure.     Dave
