HO / Re: 8 Pin connector for DCC

Here's the site. Mouseover the sidebar menu "Connectors & Harns", then select 8 pin. It's listed as NEM 652, same as NMRA.

The forum PM feature doesn't work. I'll send you my email address, feel free to write with any questions.

Since I needed a diminutive vintage in Bumble Bee colors, I took what was available. I was lucky to get the locos separately. Currently they are only available in sets, with NS EZ Track, 4 Overland Cars and Athearn DC controller.

You're welcome Jack.
While Bachmann may have 15 sound models, remember there are only 3 types of steam decoders; light, medium and heavy. That should narrow things down considerably. Of course the question remains, what are the 3 whistles in each type? You will then have only 9 variables, and some may be duplicated.

I suggest you call Soundtraxx, the number is on their site. For privacy reasons I prefer not to post the number here. They don't have a toll free number, but you probably have unlimited cell phone service. Ask for George, he usually answers the phone anyway.

Since they do all the programming, I'm sure George will know the whistles for each class, and the associated CV and value for each whistle.

I mentioned to George that I would post the information on the forum, I think he appreciates that as opposed to a zillion people calling him for information. If you find out anything, please post it here for all of us.  8)

HO / Re: Diagrams for GP-35 Diesel (Plus)

You must have an older split frame unit. If you look at the diagram for the current DC GP40, notice the trucks and motor are apparently isolated, with all the wires leading to the top. The GP35 is probably the same.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you to isolate everything, but the NCE board might still work.  It replaces the board you have.

That's ok Jonathan.

I couldn't load PDs picture either, it's 250 kilobyte. Anyway, I can't add it as a vote without a description.  ???

Hi Lee,
I have both the GP35 and GP40, both came dcc equipped with what I call a decoder board, in other words the decoder is integrated into the light board.

They are similar in the respect of not having much room for a decoder. Recently I have been suggesting the NCE replacement DCC board, designed specifically for Bachmann diesels.  You might check it out and see what you think. Caboose Hobbies sells it for about $15.  Nice price, and excellent instructions on the PDF file. In fact, the best instructions I've seen, tells you not only how to make changes, but also the benefits of making the change, all in just 8 pages. Note that the capacitors to be clipped are on top of your motor, under the board.

http://www.ncedcc.com/images/stories/manuals/bachdv35.pdf

Page 7 is almost blank, be sure to read page 8 for default settings. On page 5 are great instructions for setting up special lighting effects, or "Hyperlights" I think they are called.

I reserved a couple, to be picked up on my next trip to Denver. I plan to install them in my GP40s for a quieter drive and lighting possibilities. I see no reason why they wouldn't work in your DC models as well.

Out here we call it a "Bulldozer".  You don't want to disturb a bull while he's sleeping, just shove him out of the way.  :D

Thanks Dan.  I like the name "Western Champion".

John, Read PD's signature line.  :D  I think he meant he could only give a "generic" class description.  It's a good looking locomotive, I especially like the color. Sorry I couldn't view the video, my sloooow dialup sucks.

Lem, love the picture, thanks. I have lousy eyesight, thought that was a full size scene, then I saw the fascia. Fantastic scenery. Please do us a favor and start a new thread about the layout, with lots of views. Do you have an album at Photobucket?

Ray, You're an RVer, doesn't that CC6500 remind you of a Winnebago?  At first glance I thought there was a motorbike on the front.   :D

Great looking locomotives guys, keep 'em coming.   8)

Don,
Yes, I have one of those also, just not listed in railroad jargon, at least not while on duty.   :D

But since you mentioned it, I prefer Canadian Blended. 8)

Tom,
Thanks for the info.

John,
I can't view Youtube, please identify the locomotive so I can add it to the votes. It would also help to add a link to a picture if possible.
Thanks

FWIW, I have the Roundhouse vintage locos, they are very smooth and quiet. Some may grumble, as they have traction tires. We only use them for short excursion trains, so I have no problem with them.

When I buy a DH123 decoder, I always specify the 3" harness. (DH123P) I have a bunch of extra harnesses since my installs have been on boards with JST sockets.

On a couple of installs, I have cut off the 8 pin plug, and hardwired the JST socket and harness.

Litchfield has prewired 8 pin female sockets, also handy to add a socket. The only male 8 pin plugs I've found need wires soldered to them.

Robert,
The images you see on the album page are "thumbnails". If you click on a picture, a much larger one will appear, usually a 640 size. An 8" X 10" image is 576 pixels X 720 pixels.

When posting to the forum, the smaller uploaded size will appear, with a reduced file size. Actually, I set all my images for posting to 500 pixels wide, but I optimize the sharpness and detail first.

As a former Webmaster, I can say that for maximum "hits" and return visits, images have to be user friendly, even for those with broadband. Be thankful you're not on dialup, with all the net clutter, you would be waiting 5 to 10 minutes for a picture to load.

Robert,
Yes, I picked up two spares at $60 each on a special event sale. It's been my experience in life that when I find something I really like, it gets discontinued. I think they call it "planned obsolescence". I'm not taking any chances this time.

Robert,
I can only report that it's in the "planning stage". Soundtraxx is now making OEM decoders for Athearn diesels, but I haven't received any information about Bachmann.

Anyway, I'm sure The Bach-man will announce "if or when" diesels are available with sound, I prefer not to speculate or start rumors.

You might visit the Soundtraxx site frequently, they usually announce any new developments.  That's how I found out about the GN1000 decoders.   8)
