On30 / Re: Real 30" gauge prototypes

   How can a country which converted 80T SHAYS to 4-6-2 Pacific's and
a 2-6-0+0-6-2T, not! have interesting protoypes to model<G>. I am
collecting bits and pieces to model Tankcar #400 Charuto (Cigar), home
made  by EFPP in their shops. Sure is ugly<G>.

  Certainly by the mid thirties ladders with a safety cage were starting
  to appear. perhaps even earlier. Plant I worked in, orginally built in 1952  had  way to many, must have  climbed miles of them in my 30 years there<G>.

  Flipping through "A History of Royal Dutch Shell" show them in the
mid to late 1930s on towers. Certainly would be found on railway
structure's around the same time.

  Paul

   Phoenix Models (England) make a kit for a portable compressor (1/43rd)
circa 1930-40s.
   I have a few photos of portable compressor's used for both coal &
hard rock mining, will see if I can find them. Various books I have also show drill's used in mining.

  Check used mining equipment dealer's usually have pages & photos of
what they are trying to sell. "Savanna"  or "Nelson" are dealers, I take
a look at now and then for idea's. Their yard is about 500 miles West of
where I live, some new & a lot of old stuff to look at when I do drive by.

    Pretty sure it is the Great Northern version , with the Glacier Park color
scheme, although the GN operated a couple of NG lines, neither lasted      long enough to see the paint job, but who cares I personnally like the
paint scheme myself.

 My two cents worth.

 I would look at a OF2-6-2
 Tender version of a Maine 2-6-2
 Tank version Puffing Billy
  Slide or Piston Valve options.

  Extension of front frame add 4wheel truck, piston valve cylinders and you have the Beacon Rly's 4-6-2 Baldwin (orginal 2ft gauge from South Africa).
  Similar front end, loose the rear truck for Baldwin 4-6-0s operating in
South America on the  2½ft EFOM
 
 Loose one front, one rear truck and have a chassis for an articulated ala
Mautua with their 2-6-6-2 from two 2-6-2 chassis's . Piston valves and choice of tender or tank version


  Loose both rear trucks turn one chassis around and seperate them
to allow a Kitson or Beyer Garratt body to be added.

  Taking a look at 2½ ft gauge car deminsion's of equipment operated
on the FCA&B.  1918 equipment plans, before FCA&B was converted to meter gauge. (1929)

   Freight                      Average length 33ft to 36 ft
                                       width    8ft 2in to 8ft 8in
                                      height   10ft 6in Boxcars
   Passenger                 Length 49ft
                                     Width     9ft
                                     Height  12ft

  The FCAB hauled upwards of  2,000,000 T/Y  on 2½ft gauge, with truck exchange for the meter gauge cars of the FCB. (car deminsions  are the
same)

   FCM  "Mexicano", for hauling behind the 2-8-0<G>.

  Boxcars      Length   30ft
                    Width       7ft 5in
                    Height    10ft  10in

  FCA&B  Antofagasta (Chile) & Bolivia
  FCB      Bolivia

Feel free to run 3ft gauge cars behind 2½ft gauge locomotive power
it all works out in the end. Still converting S Std gauge to 2½ft.<G>.

  Excellent comparsion shots of the 4-4-0 vs 2-6-0, think you just sold me on getting one. OK would have been neat to have been an outside frame
but I will live with it,<G>.

  It takes about 1 minute or so  to convert the Grandt Line C&S caboose
  from 3ft to 2½ft gauge.  Happly converting HO,OO,S,On3 & O-27
for my 2½ gauge line.

Googled "Russian Iron" and as it is a manufactoring process not a color,  resultant color can range from Grey-Black to Blue, dependant on ore used
for the manufactor.   Also called "Stove Pipe Iron".
Suggested paint Floquil Gun Metal.

    Grabbed 8 HO orecars & my Porter, just to see what they looked like.
    Not very good.

  I did start a conversion on two of them, presently on hold
  to make them more closly resemble the Grandby Copper -Hidden Creek  ore cars    (with a smaller capacity) if the first two turn out I will be converting the others, should work out better for the Porter/Shay/Climax.

Would like to apologize for misleading you, I miss read your orginal post and totally missed the fact you were looking for "C&S" Hi Side gons, not Hi-Side gons in general.
 
As punishment, I think I will spend the rest of the day finishing upgrading my Q&TI ore cars, so they come close to the Bachmann cars in detail.

  A hatch on the top of the dome was opened for filling, spillage resulted usually from overfilling of car . Dome was used as outage, a place for expansion   to take place of the product if it warmed up in transist.

   Side piping elbow had a relief valve in case of over pressuring of the
car contents.

   A drain valve on the bottom of the car was used to empty the contents
to storage, either by gravity or pumping. Filling hatch would be opened to
prevent a vacumm from collapsing tank.
