HO / Re: How I nearly destroyed an engine
October 30, 2013, 09:48:37 PM
Years ago I had bought a unpainted PFM Great Northern Class Q12-10-2.... after learning my way around an air brush got up the nerve to try my hand at a Glacier Park paint scheme on
this engine and have to say at least to my eyes it turned out beautifully.
matter of fact thought it looked so great i left it on a short spur on. the railroad "just so I could admire my work. Oh' did I mention this spur was on the front edge of the layout? Yep need  say no more.
thank God I had carpeted the floor.......we all do stupid things in our lives some are just luckier than others.....

Correct jonathon' problem usually arise's because engineers forget to dispatch their engines when finishing a session and removing the motive power from the layout.after awhile the slot table will need to be cleared of those locomotive numbers.
Been down that road!
And if the throttle was not zeroed out that throttle setting is still in the computer causing the engine to start moving at that last throttle setting

Agree with rogertra 110 percent there's ñothing more irritating than a overpowering sound locomotive'we have a few members of our club that have had to be told to lower their sound levels in order for other members to be able to even carry on normal conversations in a 30x100 bldg.

Curious as to how the bachmann running gear is holding up with the heavier brass superstructure?

As per J's recomendations don't go hog wild on most layouts 40 cars are a pretty impressive train ;D

Alright was at our club this morning to set up my wi throttle on my iphone and brought my EM 1 with me to see just what it would pull' our Max grade is 1•5% and it took 37 cars up with just a bit of slipping' removing the 3 50' covered hoppers for a total of 34 40' cars seemed just about a ideal train length with no slipping
so on level track 40 cars shouldn't be unreasonable number I would guess.

Listen to what Jonathons telling you and save yourself some trouble he's correct in that these models made today have more complicated drive systems than back in the olden days when adding weight was a common way of increasing tractive effort in our engines. In those times connection between motor and gearbox and drivers was simple and pretty much indestructible.

What do you mean that one burned dried milk?

Indeed dried milk was used several times.  In the 20s it was shown to have reduced smoke over coal with a similar heating property.

Here is a link to a demo done in the 30s.

Note today the Grand Canyon RR fires its steam using vegetable oil allegedly to make it greener.

Yeh'The folks up in Williams Az. Are complaining about the smell of French fries cooking when they run their steamers.....!!
