General Discussion / Re: Compliments To The Board
March 22, 2009, 11:56:52 PM
I generally look at any post that peaks my interests and frequently those you have had responses from those whom I have come to respect.

I follow the general, HO, On30 regularly and the N and Plasticville occasionally.

I hope that my replys and new topics have been responsive and/or thought provoking. I think we are a great group and respect each others opinions and behave like ladies and gentlemen unlike some forums where my choice of the E-Z Command DCC causes me to be treated as a second class citizen.

Thanks to all for mutual respect.

I agree that wyes are space eaters, however, my prototypes, C&O and Clinchfield in Elkhorn City, KY used a wye. I am sure back in 1915 when it was built there was a good reason.

General Discussion / Dinner in the Diner
March 20, 2009, 10:20:13 PM
Yampa Bob's St. Patricks Day Cornbeef and cabbage got me thinking about food ( it doesn't take much to make my mind drift in that direction).

As this is a railroad discussion board, naturally my thoughts drifted to dining cars.

When I was growing up, I would often travel from Covington, VA to Washington, DC to visit my Grandmother usually on the C&O Sportsman or George Washington. This always involved a meal in the dining car.

Crisp white linen, dinner wear with the C&O kitten and food fit for a king.
I was particularly fornd of hot roast beef sandwhich with mashed potatoes and gravy and iced tea. Half a century later I still wonder how the plates stayed in place as the train went around curves.

What memories do others have of dining car experiences ?

Joe,

Helpful information. I would be turning  Clinchfield 4-6-6-4 and C&O 2-8-4s  this would seem to be visually a better solution than the Atlas wye.

HO / Bachmann NO 5 Wye turnout

Can anyone report on using the 44569 wye turnout in the construction of a turning wye (three point wye)?

I am curious howmuch additional space these require over the Atlas wye ?

General Discussion / Re: Bachmann 2009 Catalog

As nice an engine as the 2-10-2 is, it is in noway near the various odd ball 2-10-2's the C&O rostered. The most numerous class - Class B-1- had twin sand domes and a \Wooten firebox. This engine came from the Hocking Valley. I thought about this by adding the C&O long Vanderbuilt tender, but it still misses the mark.

Having said that, I wouldn't kick one out of the roundhouse. (CRR/SOU Interchange maybe?)

Bob,

I applaud your willingness to share  knowledge with the rest of us. In fact, I don't think I am far off in suspecting if a question comes up that you don't have a ready answer for that you search it out to supply an answer.

Occasionally, you get somewhat technical when it comes to the electrical side of things, but you are always willing to simplify your explanations for the electrically challenged among us.

Most of all, you accept good natured teasing in the spurt it was intended.

Bob, I am proud to call your my friend.

Code 100 rail also looks unrealistic, waaaay to large.  Code 83 for the diesel era and code 70 for steam is much better. Still on the large size.

Diesel would look betterwith the Code 70 and code 55 for sidings.

Steam Code 55 main line and 40 for sidings.

What do I use, unfortunately Atlas code 100, required by my modular group standards. When ballasted and painted it looks reasonable.

Judging from the number of views, this appears to be a hot topic. Up to now, I've only been concerned with finishing my Colorado roster. I just received the 2009 catalog, unless I missed someting I don't see a single item for CP or CN. /quote]

In HO, SD40-2  CPRail and Canadian national
           GP35 Canadian Pacific (2); CPRail (2)
          GP38-2  CP Rail
C P Stock Car ,several Canadian grain cars, CN gondola

         Canadian National 2-10-2
These seem to be all and you had to have too much time on your hands  ;To find them

I wouldn't mind a set of those grain hoppers except they are about 30 years in the future on my layout.

OK Bob, no need for the throne room thread.

The catalog has some interesting developments, particularly for a C&O fan.

1. Apparently the C&O J2 mountain has disappeared, at least I didn't find it.

2. The Vanderbilt tender is still there and would be useful with the 2-6-6-2
to represent a class H-6 which was more numerous (and more popular
   with the crews)

3. The 2-8=0 is a close representation of Class G-5, which was a Richmond
built ALCO rather than a Baldwin. Came to C&O from Hocking Valley

4. The Baldwin 4-6-0 is close to an ex- Hocking Valley that served on the
   C&O into the 1950's

5. I found several diesels decorated for both CP and CN

6. Very attractive covered Canadian grain hoppers.

Now if the bank* starts loaning money anytime soon, my procurement department might issue a RFP for some additional motive power.

Bob,

I greatly enjoyed my visit to CH, wish I was a little closer.

I see your post was at 3:15 am, I guess you are either a night owl or early bird. ;D

I got a complementary 2009 catalog with my E-Z Command replacement. I haven't had a lot of time to examine it in detail, but did notice a few items I might be interested in.

I discovered That the C&O rostered a few 4-6-0's acquired in the Hocking Valley merger that survived into the early fifties that might be neat to have.

Catalogues - what dreams are made of.

My replacement E-Z Command was just delivered by UPS.

And, are you ready for this? Bachmann called to see if it had arrived.

Good luck to everyone else and keep the faith.
