HO / Re: Locomotive Suggestions!
May 01, 2008, 01:45:35 PM
I started a thread requesting a nice B&M B-15 2-6-0 mogul.  This model would be a perfect fit in the great Spectrum fleet.  Especially way up here in "mogul country".   This seems to be a wheel arraingement that I find lacking in the HO scale...The Athearn / Roundhouse is just not up to snuff.

Give it 6 weeks.....shouldn't be much longer than that.....the post-Xmas rush should be over by now.

I agree.  I snet my 2-8-0 Connie in on 2/15 and received it's replacement on 3/25.

HO / Re: Push for a Spectrum 2-6-0, dcc and sound?

So I guess it comes down to the manufacturer ( in this case Bachmann ) not thinking thee is a market for this locomotive?  Too bad.  With the 4-4-0, 4-6-0, 2-8-0 already in the Spectrum fleet I would think that a 2-6-0 Mogul would be a great addition and a natural fit...

Mr. Bach-Mann,

Unfortunatley there have been no responses, as of yet, to this thread. ???  But I posted this over on the Model Railroader forum site and have a good many other MRRers that feel as I do.  Have a look:

There.  I've done what I can.  Now it up to you! ;D

HO / Push for a Spectrum 2-6-0, dcc and sound?
April 09, 2008, 07:10:52 AM
I know I'm starting this early as the 2008 releases are just to hit the shelves.  But can we ask Bachmann for a 2-6-0 Spectrum?  I'd love to see it released at least dcc ready, but with the dcc and Tsunami would be a bonus ( I'd order mine now ).  The Mogul was huge up in this area ( the Boston and Maine ).  Sorry Roundhouse, your 2-6-0 is not "up to snuff" as long as a MRC sound decoder is installed.  So how about it?  These must be more Mogul fans than just me right?

How about a nice B-15 for example?

That would work fine, but what would you do when the snow gets brown from dust accumalation? With powdered snow all you have to do is apply another layer or vacuum and re-apply new snow. With your version you end up with a permanant brown mess! I found some dense white foam that I can make 5 gallons for about 10 bucks, with the food processor. That beats Woodland Scenic's $10 per quart. As a matter of fact, I found out that was how they make it, but their bulk foam cost is a whole lot cheaper. An employee, and friend of mine, of Woodland Scenic told me they have about 50 cents in each quart of snow, and that was mainly the cost of the container!
Sprinkle on some more plaster and hit it with a mist of water.  Presto, white again...

Plaster of paris.  Sprinkle it on and spray it with water.  An article was written in Scenery Tips and Techniques from MR.  My book is dated 1989 and is ISBN # 0-89024-095-7.  Great book and has lots of cool (no pun intended) ideas.  It's pretty much zip-texturing with white plaster.

If it seems pretty quiet around here, it's because everyone is waiting for midnight. :D

Yeah, unfortunately this is no April fools joke.

Ok guys, it's me Justin again with a few more questions. (This is my new account. Don't believe me? Check Styntwin409's signature.)

  • How should I attach cork roadbed to a sheet of foam?
  • How should I attach the track (code 83, if it helps) the the roadbed?
  • When splitting the roadbed, how should i do it? I don't want to rip it because it might destroy it.
  • How should I clean up the messy roadbed edges?
Thanks in advance for any replies! :)

~Justin

Justin, I've had luck using the following methods:
1.  I just completed all my cork and track.  I fastened the cork to my 1" foam with white glue.  Works like a charm.  Tack in place for a few days and presto.
2.  I used track nails to keep the track in alignment.  A little white caulk that dries clear did the job.
3.  My HO cork was pre split.  Mostly.  Just a quick pull and it seperated no problem.
4.  I'm not sure what you mean by the messy roadbed edges.  Are you looking at the edge of cork?  If so when you ballast the track that will all be covered up.

Hope this helps.

HO / 15" radius and a Spectrum 4-4-0
April 01, 2008, 07:08:24 AM
Have any of you had any luck witha  4-4-0 and 15" radius track?  My sons layout, due to my limited layout size, has 15" radius corners.  Now he already has an IHC 4-6-2 that has no problem with the 15" track.  It may look a bit funny, but it works and he loves it!

I've heard of front truck derailing issues with the 4-4-0?!

The Spectrum 4-4-0 is an OUTSTANDING locomotive from a looks and operational standpoint; however, it struggles pull two 80' coaches on a flat grade, so you should be close with 5 cars.

There is nothing even in this engine's league with other 4-4-0 offerings from anyone, and it really is sweet sitting next to a couple of Spectrum
4-6-0's.

Matt

I'll disagree with you if that is all your 4-4-0 will pull.  My Roundhouse 4-4-0 has not trouble at all with my 4 fifty foot B&M coaches and a 2% grade around an 18" radius.

Maybe it's the coaches, not the locomotive. Are those 80-foot coaches Bachmann Spectrums? They're pretty heavy. My Mantua Atlantic with a can motor really struggles to pull four of them. Are those B&M 50-foot coaches Roundhouse cars? I have a couple of them myself and don't think they're particularly heavy.

Mine are indeed the Roundhouse 50' cars.  Not very heavy at all.  Maybe you are right and that is the difference.  My apoligies as I did not think of the different manufacturers and car weight.  Rookie mistake.

HO / A satisfied Bachmann Service customer
March 26, 2008, 09:02:36 AM
Here's a cudos to the Bachmann Service Department.  My dcc and sound 2-8-0 Connie was sent to Service for a full replacement.  It was signed for on February 15th.  I sent it Priority mail with a signature confirmation for tracking.  I called on March 19th just to check the status and was greeted very nicely and was given my customer ID number.  I was told it would be a few more weeks, and to give them a call in mid-April if I had not heard from them.  Surprise, surprise.  I recieved my new Connie yesterday afternoon.

I am thrilled.  It's going to be very hard to get me not to buy another product from them with service that good.
