Thank you gentlemen.

If I could obtain Li-Ion batteries here in Australia that had proper battery cut of IC's built into them I would likely give Li-Ion a chance.

I do have a couple of nearby customers long term testing locally assembled Li-Ion battery packs for me.  So far so good, but they do not cut off properly.  At least locally I can get them back to resurrect them if they do go too low in voltage.
Importing them into Australia is out of the question because of weight considerations and the likely problem with the airlines of actually transporting them by air postage.
In the meantime I am stuck with NiCd or NiMh. Or, in this case the hybrid NiMh/Alkaline AA cells I used.  They work just fine and are easy to fit in.

Any one interested in how I did it can read up on the article here:

I certainly would be very interested in buying a commercially available modernised mogul like Kevin has shown.  Maybe even the 4-4-0 as well.

The second run K-27 also had metal sideframe tender trucks.  Nice and robust.

You will of course have to arrange for the batteries to be recharged.  Either by making them removable or fitting a charging jack for in loco charging.
Getting the stock loco chuff timer to work will also require some creative additional electronics or fabrication of your own reed switch and magnets.

Well actually, the decoder motor ouput is a bi polar DC.  That looks like a squared off AC waveform on a scope.

So where does one get to take a look at the Climax described above?

You could easily fit 5 x SubC NiCd batteries in each side tank of the old one.  So I suppose you should be able to with this new one.

I am really looking forward to a new and improved drive.

As understand it the original "LYN" was actually 1:22.5 Spectrum loco.

Bachmann will have a hit on their hands if the new "LYN" is really going to be 1:20.3.

What will be more interesting to me is if the drive train is regaugeable to 32mm gauge for the British 16 mm  scale (2' gauge) market.
Any ideas Mr Bachmann?

I installed Phoenix P5 + P5T but it was battery powered and radio controlled.

Perhaps you could get the correct number of toots relative to the direction by switching the NMRA - LARGE SCALE switch the other way.

Other than that I am afraid you will need advice from someone more conversant with the DCC deocder fitted.

That be it.
You cannot control the sound functions without DCC.

Actually Bachmann got the PnP socket specs correct, based on the original design criteria from DigiTrax.
It was AristoCraft who screwed up, and came out with a mirror image of the pinouts.

The ESC package I have announced is specificaly for the K-27. The plug in part will be a bit too big for the smaller Plug'n'Play equipped locos.
Assuming Bachmann will once again kindly give me permission to announce products as they have done with the K27 deal, I will shortly be announcing another package using a different PnP ESC that will fit the smaller locos.

Graham.
Did you look to see if the other evidence determines which version the loco is?
The best indicator is the way the track power is picked up by the tender trucks.  No wipers indicates a modified loco.

There should be virtually no slop between the counterweights on either side of the axle.  It is normal that there is a lot of slop between the wheels and the counterweights.
