The kit comes with four sides of beef - two right and two left!

I've thought about that Jim.  If nothing else is available, I'll work on that.  Maybe about 2020!  ;D

Most turnouts need a bit of tweaking.  Atlas normally needs the least amount.

HO / Re: Brake mechanism- Front or back?

brake.  On a model, yes.  On a real one, no.  I imagine some large mobile models might have real brake gear.

DCC and smoke get along together like penguins and sea lions.

Actually some deck bridges and those similar to them have roadbed, though it doesn't have a slope.  The simplest solution is to use Atlas bridges which have track already installed and install abutments so the bridge track is at the same height as the EZ-Track.  Cut the EZ-Track plastic roadbed connectors on the bridge ends and let everything go into place.

I have the same question Bob has.  I have one buss line that is about 55 feet long and is not twisted.  It would be the devil to try to twist it, but fairly easy to tape it every few feet.

HO / slaughter house workers

Anybody have a good suggestion for figures for a slaughter house.  I have the Walther's one right where the eastbound comes out of Sugar grove WV and having a couple of men with bloody aprons would be a great touch!
Also, I found the Walther's ice house to be easy to assemble, but in need of a couple of changes.  It's obvious that the icing platform and the ice house itself need to connect, but can't be touching each other.  The rear rail doesn't have gates to allow ice to go from house to platform, nor are there any bridges between the two.  I also found that while the box art shows X bracing for the legs, the kit only has enough pieces for Z bracing.

Kadee has very good quality control.  Buy a Kadee high gauge, bend all gladhands up a bit, file off the paint on the shank, and you will have an excellent coupler.

Is this the new C&O H-4 with the 12V tender?  Or is this the older USRA light Mallet 2-6-6-2 with USRA heavy tender?

Uncoupling spring replacement.  I went crazy trying to insert new springs until I learned a very easy trick.  If you are a guy, get your wife or girlfriend to thread a needle for you with a fairly long piece of thread.  When a spring bounces out, take a new spring and the threaded needle.  Put the needle through the spring length wise and pull so the needle is out of the spring and the thread runs through it.  Makes sure that only one end of the thread stays in the spring.  Then insert the spring into the coupler.  If the spring bounces out, the thread makes it very easy to find as it does not go far.  Since adopting this method I've lost no springs and found the coupler easier to respring.

General Discussion / Re: Any Clue to what size On3 is?
October 06, 2009, 10:44:07 AM
On3 is O scale that models 3 ft gauge, and runs on HO track.

Ken,
There is a typo in here somewhere.  On3 is three foot narrow gauge.  On30 is thirty inch narrow gauge.  There is a real world six inch difference between the two.  On30 track is HO gauge.  On3 does NOT run on HO track.

HO / Re: Adhesive for ground foam

It may not be necessary, but I paint brown first, then sprinkle dirt colored ground foam over glue, followed by grass.  This way I get the of bare spots and thin grass in some areas.

HO / Re: "Correct" coal hoppers/coal cars for steam era

The C&O came out with roller bearing 70 ton 3 bay hoppers.  Accurail does a model of it, complete with the white stripe along the bottom to indicate roller bearings.  In addition, it has the correct 1948 donut herald.  Proto has some of the rebuilt composite hoppers.

Just in case - on the C&O a K-3 was a heavy Mikado - but not a USRA heavy Mike.  The K-4 was a Kanawha, a 2-8-4.
All of the H's except for the 7 and 8 were 2-6-6-2s, all about the same size.
