HO / Re: Layout Survey - Part II
April 30, 2007, 07:37:45 PM
What kind of turnout control do you use? Manual? Electric remote? Ground throws? Mechanical? Some of all/each? Central control locations? Along the layout edge?

Electric, except when the #%&*%$! E-Z track turnouts malfunction. Then they become manual/ non-working. ( see E-Z track turnout trouble or E-Z track tunout trouble II)
If you use DCC, do you use stationary decoders to control turnouts?

And most importantly, why do you use what you use? Are you happy with it? And, what if anything would you do different in the future?
I'm fairly happy with them most of the time. I'm not sure about the future, I can't think that far ahead ;)...

When we have a few responses, I will share my thoughts and my choices

Roger,

Regarding the 'Paducah' style sand dome, I am planning to try my hand at building one for use as a 'pattern' for Ray Breyer (possible 'resin casting'. I better let Ray 'fill' in what he is planning to do if he wants to.

Hopefully, when I have the 2-8-0 boiler completed, and before I tackle tender, I plan to 'take a break' and build a Paducah dome like I 'kit bashed' on this model and send it to Ray (Orsonroy) for whatever he may want to do with it (He has been a 'wealth' of information and encouragement in my 'kit bashing' attempts). So it may be that sometime in the 'future' there will be at least one 'prototypical' Paducah dome available to us 'die-hard' ICRR steam fanatics! :D

The only 'commercial' Paducah domes that I am aware of that are available are from Bowser. However, they are too small for most ICRR steam applications, and aren't really detailed or shaped correctly.

Actually ICRR #908, according to Ray, had 3 different style sand domes in its career! There are a lot of different varieties of these kind of domes ... probably that's why they aren't commercially available.

Joe: ... I think I'll check around eBay and see if there might be a 'lonely' Hallmark tender for a 2-8-0 that needs a good home  :)

thanks everyone for the nice comments

And out of the kindness of your heart you'll take it in your house and raise it and...

Seriously though,

It's lookin' good, Lanny.

General Discussion / Your latest modeling project
April 30, 2007, 06:58:48 PM
What was your latest project for your model railroad?

Mine was building the Walthers Cornerstone Red Wing flour mill kit... I'll post pics ASAP.

1. Do you attend any train shows, trade shows, or swap meets, as some people call them? Yes

2. If yes, how many average per year? Probably about 2 or 3 a year

3. Which ones, & where are your favorites?  the Bach-man should like to know these also. I go to any local shows

4. What do you, or would you like to see at these shows?  That's my favorite ? I like seeing the modular layouts, and I like the places that sell a lot of used stuff. Railroad memorabilia is cool, and I like getting deals with Tyco stuff.

This is probably why the Bach-man won't allow anybody to post "for- sale" ads on the forum. Keep it up, Bachmann!

One question though, Derek:

How'd you make the schematic diagram of your layout?

Control panel looks nice... I hope to have something like that for my layout when I get it wired.

General Discussion / Re: Fast Clock

It is usually a clock that has been speeded up to give a frame of reference for timetable operations.  Frequently a speed of 10 actual minutes to a "scale hour" is used--making a 2 hour operating session represent 12 hours--or 5 min per hour making that 2-hour session represent a full 24 hours.  (at that speed, you don't need to modify the clock--just ignore the hour hand).

The 10-min hour works well since the hours of service laws limit operating personnel to 12 hours anynow.  A friend on whose layout I used to operate modified an electric alarm clock--2 hours for a 12-hour session which began at 7:00 am. The "alarm" was set for 6:00 pm--but instead of a buzzer, that started a motor-driven Variac that took ten minutes (one scale hour) to dim out the room lights, leaving only some blue bulbs to simulate moonlight--and making it difficult to see what we were doing, like reading car numbers.  Incentive to get the "day's work" done. It also activated circuits that turned building lights on and off.  gj

Thanks for the information about the 5:1 scale clock. It's not hard to remove the hour hand on a clock, most of the time. Buy an old smallish clock at a garage sale and try unscrewing the plastic cover that protects the hands. If it's like the smaller, inexpensive clocks I've seen. Once the plastic cover is off, you can take off the hands of the clock. Take off the hour hand, re-attach the clear plastic cover to the face of the clock and Presto!... You have a 5:1 fast clock!

It's back to being fast again, down here

Thanks, everybody for the advice... I think I'm gonna "wash" the portals & walls with brown , tan and black acrylic paint diluted in water. I'll post photos once it's finished and installed with the hill on the layout.

I'd rather see one operating than five stuffed and mounted!
Gene

So would I, but I'd rather see 5 stuffed and mounted than 5 left out somewhere to decay ;)

BTW,

While they have been sitting in the woods for the last 30+ years, our goal is to rebuild them and have them running in the next couple of years. Once in running condition, the plan is to lease them to the nearby West Virginia Central Railroad to allow people to see these pieces of history actually running on the rails making money for other museum projects
