General Discussion / Re: Hot glue gun
July 27, 2007, 11:26:08 PM
I Sparingly use the hot glue gun on parts that are not clearly vissible on a plastic house. like the inside.
i would use what they say to use... plastic cement
i use this plastic glue substance its not what they suscribe and comes in a small bottle.
its not hot and does'nt leave stringy "things"
;D i prefer the ready built model though...

General Discussion / Oxidation
July 27, 2007, 03:55:12 PM
heh train lovers  ::)  ;D

i don't have a big layout compared to others
(5/9)
but i had some of my tracks oxidize witch i now know and i had to buy a new set.
and now i have everything set up
i want to put some conductive oil on the tracks
so i take some of my liquid i have lying around and instead of manually wiping the entire tracks/ i decided to make a temporary cleaning car.
the first rolling stock i fitted i rubber banded a piece of that soft packing material. not styrofoam but... that soft stuff... it cleaned off dust and such.
the other car i fitted i put some conductive thick liquid on the plastic wheels and i quickly put it on and connected it to my loco and made it drive around
i put my finger on the tracks and i felt a smooth liquid
it worked! it first dusted and then oiled the tracks
and the rolling stock isn't permanently bonded to the cleaning mechanism.

is this a good way? or does anybody have a better idea

me im in my preteen years
growing up in brooklyn new york
not the ghetto but
near the subways
i took the subway and i was facinated by it
and i can see that mannnyy years ago
that the older people were near the enthrawling steam engines.
i think that model railroading is getting more modern
but still less people are involved because they were'nt influenced when they were kids.

as you can see im not the best speller.  :) rock on cat guy

wow vry "cool" stories
i realize that most model train lovers are sort of... elderly..
:( whats gonna happen to model railroading in 30 years?
whats gonna happen when the "original railroader" go to the big train yard in the sky?

General Discussion / NEW POLL: when did you start?
July 23, 2007, 01:15:39 PM
New poll here
i would like to know
1.when did you first have intrest in trains and what was your first model train set,
2. Who has a 4/8 board/ half/all their basement or their entire house devoted to trains?

1.i like trains since i was about 4 when i saw them at a trains show.
my first model train set was a life like set with a mix of bachmann with hook couplers. (still have it mixed in with my other new ones)
2. i have a 4/8 bored. i'm 12 so i guess i'm in model "training"

I doubt that Summertrainz has the necessary knowledge or retrofitting components to install knuckle couplers on those locomotives or the rolling stock. The design of the horn hook coupler in the image he linked to utilizes a tiny screw and an open coupler pocket, or a talgo truck. In neither case is the obsolete design ready to accept a knuckle coupler. And Summertrainz certainly doesn't sound proficient enough to modify his equipment by body-mounting draft gear and couplers.

Summertrainz, if my assessment is accurate and you just want to be able to use all of the equipment you have, a transition car might be the simplest solution for you. In your case it would seem that the rolling stock that is fitted with knuckle couplers would make the best choice for the transition car. You just remove the coupler cover and swap the knuckle coupler at one end for a horn hook coupler. This allows you to use both types in the same consist.

I am very impressed with your judgement
your very right
i know little about changing couplers
ill look into your explanation
thanks !

i have and there are some freight cars in  it too
there is also a baltimore and a lighted ohio passenger car from a metal company known as mantua that went out buisness in 2001

i have been working with bachmann trains for a while
until i found in my attic in a mis labled  box...
life like and bachmann trains from the 90's
some broken "primitive"functions locomotives (a small motor in the front)
with a price tag of 30$ at the time.
some track and a beyond repair transformer
the trains fit on the track
thats all good
but they have different couplers
http://www.udisco.com/hobbies/pics/921410.jpg
http://www.trains.com/mrr/objects/images/mr_abc_8-02_hocouplers_07.jpg
and they break away from each other easily
the life like and the bachmann in the 90's had the same couplers and they stay together and the "e-z couplers have a hard time staying on with them
and i have limited funds so i cant "smash em with a hammer"
its sentimental value from my childhood
is there a way i can have them fit together?

General Discussion / Re: number of trains

its me with 3 locos
(about 2 or 3 comments up)
:P
i feel small compared to you people with 300
i forgot to mention the boxcars 4 and the 2 coal hoppers
and also
2 flatbeds for cars and such.
you people really devote your lives to to trains
do you make a profit or have people pay?
or is it just so you can be in your basement and do an evil laugh as you watch your trains go around your 30000 dollar basement

I have 3 loco's
2 steam consolidation 2-8-0 and a baldwin
1 diesel  (conrail)
i have plenty of cars
3 union pacific cars and a baltimore and ohio one
all are lighted
i have some life like freight cars
and 2 oil tanker cars.
they go around the 4 by 8
piece of wood
there is a depo for cars not in use.
And that takes me to another question
how would i get bachman connected to life like cars
because i have tried an unorthodox way of taping them together while moving
and i reallly should find a way to keep them together because there "connecters" (forgot what they were called rite now)
are different and come off from each other easily...

Oh my god
thank you
im still in my sigh of relife when they work
and the problem was not the connections
just my stupidity not to realize it was a switch AND a button.
thanks again
and by the way
words of wisdom are always good  :D
