HO / Re: Tenders question
January 07, 2008, 04:10:20 PM
??? I think some of you don't understand what I am asking about.

My locomotive is Bachmann.  But the question with the tenders is seen in product search of the Bachmann web site.  The loco I have has two plugs, one with four wires and the other with two.  Both are plugged into sockets in the tender.  But looking at the tenders in Product search, some of them have the two plugs that are to be plugged into sockets in the locomotive.

1.) My locomotive wires plug into tender.
But some of the tenders in Product search show that
2.) the tender has the wires to be plugged into the loco.

This is what is confusing me

HO / Tenders question
January 07, 2008, 10:40:55 AM
I have one steam locomotive with another one on the way.  Recently, I've been thinking about getting another tender for it.  While looking at the tenders in HO scale, I noticed that some of them have wires sticking out of them to be hooked up to the cab, but some do not.  these wires look identical to the wires on my loco except that mine come from the loco to the tender, not from the tender to the loco.  Did Bachmann change the way the tenders are hooked up?
Thank you

That is one thing I'd like to see from Bachmann, a turntable.  But a problem arises that would need a solution before it would even be considered.  How many track connections should come off the turntable?  Roundhouses vary from 3-6, and some people model even more stalls.  The other thing would be, of course, leaving the engine house.  How many tracks should leave the turntable away from the shed, and in which direction?

General Discussion / Re: ez command

NO,
You will need to change the addresses of some of the locos to different numbers.  Otherwise the person controlling number three will control all locos addressed to that number.   All Bachmann locos with DCC are pre-set to address three.  To change this is simple.  Make sure you have one loco with address three on the track, that way when you change the address it only affects one loco not all of them.  Press and hold the button 3.  While holding it down, press the stop button.  Now the power light should flash rapidly.  Now simply press the address button you want to send you locomotive to, 1-9.  Address 10 is used for regular DC locomotives, unless you have a regular power pack hooked up properly to the EZ Command; then, you would be able to run ten DCC and one DC with the same electrical hookup.

Hope this benefits your group,

HO / Re: DCC decoder installation in Bachmann locos
January 01, 2008, 01:34:11 PM
They may already have DCC installed.  For the 4-8-2 locos, take the tender apart and you can easily tell if they have a decoder in them.  Bachmann locos use the 8-pin DCC connection type; if there is no decoder, any type of 8-pin plugs should work unless you want it to have sound, then you would have to find the sounds for that loco.  As for the Climax and the shays, I know nothing about them.
     OR
If you have a DCC controler, test each loco one at a time on the track.  All Bachmann DCC equipped locos are preprogrammed to respond to address 3.  Hope this works.

HO / Re: Figure 8 but train stops

I've had similar problems with my track.  I found out that the track connectors were faulty.  I had to clean them thoroughly.  Then with the weight of the loco on that piece it created the blockage of power somehow.  I had to clean it again.  But afterwards, running the train over it several times on high speed, slowering it down every now and then finaly it works fine now.  But I must say it took me several days to do this.  In your case you may just need to replace the connectors, clean them, or you might even be missing them altogether.

I don't have much, therefore I don't have much of that problem.  But I've heard others say they added weight to the front trucks and also the front portion of the tender as well.  Hope this works.

My most recent locomotive was Gordon from the Thomas the Tank Engine series.  I also have a Baldwin 2-8-0 consolidation, unlettered.

SWEET

Great modeling.  Did you have any kind of guide for it, or was it all mind set modeling?  Anyway, I'd like to know how you did it.

HO / Re: Start out with DCC?
December 18, 2007, 10:45:07 AM
I'm only 20 right now, but I've been fascinated by trains for years.  About five or six years ago, my interst in trains sort of dwindled because all I had was a basic oval with NO switches to expand with.  Now, I'm back into trains when I found out about DCC.
Here's what I say, get a few DCC locomotives but confine them to your DC layout.  Also, plan ahead.  It is useless to upgrade your system to DCC if you do not have the extra track for the other locomotives to run, say enough track and switches for a basic bouble oval and a few sidings.  Now, your son would be eager to run more than one loco at a time, and he'll have fun switching back and forth off the sidings.  As for the EZ Command, I would recommend it as a beginner.  It is quite simple and offers enough variety to wet a youngster's appetite.  Believe me, It did the same for me, and I don't consider myself a youngster anymore. ;D

Have fun and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Sure, it helps in one way.  But it'll be hard to run him while he's in transport back and forth.   I'll wait to send him back until after Christmas.  That way I know Bachmann should've had enough time to receive my warranty card.

Thanks Corrie and GG, and have a
MERRY CHRISTMAS,and this post marks the end of this topic. :)

I tested his middle flywheels on one of my turnouts, and it still registers a short circuit.  As for taking him apart, I'm not that confident in myself.

Thanks anyway

The pilot and trailing wheels work fine,  Both front and rear flywheels cause the short, but I can't really check the center flywheel.

Thanks Guilford Guy, I'll take a look at it.

Check and see if Gordon will run without his front wheels and the back wheel.

??? what? ???
