Sorry, my computer was hit by a spyware program and I just got it back today. So I've actually got something that's worth a little money? Cool! Selling it, however, is the last on my mind.

Yep, that's the mail car. Loco is a Northern Pacific #628 (Lionel 027 diesel switcher)

Had to be late 50's or early 60's when I got a Lionel O gauge set. It was boxed up and put away when I started high school in 1966. About 10 years ago, I started wondering what happened to it. Mom said I had it, I said it was still at her house. Looked both places several times by couldn't find it.

When I started having grandsons (had daughters, no sons) I started to think about the train again because the boys loved to watch Thomas and play with the wooden trains.  Once again I searched, but still couldn't find it. Got some HO stuff and have set it up several time in the kitchen so we could play with it. Been slow working on a table in the basement so we can do more with it.

Two months ago, my sister was looking for some stuff she had at mom's and found it. Flat cars with a boat, one with two cars, one with a helicopter (broken) :'(, a magnet operated mail car (door opens and a bag is thrown out (bag missing), train station, diesel engine. Don't know if it would work. Sure is dirty and the track is in pretty rough shape, but I'm happy I have it back and will likely have the guy at the local train club look it over.  Morgun

The images of rail equipment are computer generated wannabes.  They were generated by a person who almost, but not quite, knew what a train looked like.  Look at the pilot of the locomotive; the lower end of the coupling link does not exist.  It just ends in a blob.  The locomotive has an air compressor.  It looks like a 55 gallon drum sitting on the walkway, with plumbing.  There were no airbrakes in the 1860s so it does not belong there.
The railroad's 'end of track' changed by the hour.  "Hell on Wheels" was the name for the portable den of iniquity that followed the railroad's construction camp.
The clerestory on the passenger car was not unusual for the time.

I watch the show because I'm involved with cowboy action shooting. On the "cowboy" website they always comment on the guns being period correct :D

HO / Re: Starting to build 1st RR

Thanks to all. I do have and use anyrail. I am going to make that end big enough for 22"R, but I am going to experiment with the 22-18, etc. pattern. Will share info as the build goes along.

HO / Starting to build 1st RR
July 31, 2013, 07:50:52 PM
Well the wife finally got a section of basement cleaned up and is allowing me to start building my table.  With the space she gave me. I'm leaning toward a L shape that would be against 3 walls. I have what I think could be a problem in one of the corners. That being reaching across the table into the corner. I know that it is better to use 22"R than 18"R  curves. ( I've got on loco that doesn't like 18"R curves) The method of alternating 22"R and 18"R pieces would work in the layout I'm working on. Will that help prevent possible derailments? Thanks, Morgun 30

Sorry, I know this has likely been discussed, and I did look through the first five pages on the search, but what is the best way to get a .75" piece of ez track to join with another? Thnaks

rbryce1, while I felt your pain and frustration reading this thread (I have been there (here) myself) I am glad to see you persisted in trying to figure out the problem.  I am curious to find out what Bachmann does for you........

And I hear your point loud and clear on how some approach trying to help in answering a question with the mindset of "bc I never had that problem must mean your problem lies elsewhere".

Yes, I see both sides here. 1, the re-railer should just simply do that, period. 2, de-railing is not desirable and the cause should be corrected.

Some people want everything RTR while others get enjoyment out of tinkering and fine-tuning.

One thing we all have in common is the enjoyment we get from this hobby, and helping others.

Balrog, That looks great

bfelix, I too am in the process of building my first layout. I'm doing it so the grandkids and I can do something together. All the time I'm thinking "bigger, bigger, bigger," but you have shown that it doesn't have to be big for the little one to have fun with it.

HO / Re: turnouts?

Not sure if this helps you, but I believe that if you add a 1 1/2" piece to your curve section, it will be the same length of the curve in your turnout

I recently posted that my wife decided to clean up part of the basement to allow me to finally set up my layout. I built and L shape table. Well, now she has decided to clean up the entire basement and wants to make it a "second" family room. She thinks that my table will take up too much space and want to confine me to one end. This may not be that bad a deal as I will have a area that would be 14' x 6' ( maybe even as much as 8' ) I told her that this would actually take more space away from her, but she doesn't see it that way. So, I could be looking at a walk-in layout. This would, as you all know, would allow for more track.

I'm thinking that at 6' wide, I should have a minimum of 28" open to move around in. This would give me two 22" wide straight sections.

Questions. Will that ( the 28" opening) be enough? And are there any suprise problems with a walk-in layout? Thanks, Morgun 30

HO / Building a yard
March 04, 2013, 11:35:25 AM
Well, I got a table up (yes, it will need some fine tuning) and set up my track to see how it worked. Not too bad for a first attempt.

I'm building a yard and was wondering about the best way to get the most storage out of the least amount of space. I was playing around on anyrail, and it appears that using series of #4 turnouts works best. Is there a better way.

Balrog21, I looked at your update and your yard looks pretty tight. How did you construct it?
Thanks, Morgun 30

WOW!! Great job.

Jeff, I was wondering about that. Seems pretty study, but if I'm not 100% happy with it. I'll redo it. After all, does anyone ever do it right the very first time? ;)
