General Discussion / Re: Power routing turnouts
November 08, 2008, 08:40:09 AM
General electrical question about power routing turnouts with standard DC as operating power source. Running On30 on Bachmann HO E-Z Track for back oval and On30 Flex Track for sceniced logging modules in foreground.
Plan to use HO Bachmann E-Z turnouts for passing siding on oval and to get on and off oval to On30 trackage ( see rough sketch with oval omited ).
Would like to use power routing turnouts in forground to avoid all the switches and wiring on the five blind sidings. Did Google search as shown by Yampa Bob and found much help with wiring details. I had found but lost a sight that had which brand turnouts were power routing.

Thank you,
Allen

Here in west Michigan last summer, a little used line took an engine to the end of the line to retrieve stored cars. The engine was litterally walked along. Passing between houses and a lake the engine litterally cut sod as the lawns were well developed. At driveway crossings they had to dig about four inches of gravel. Don't know about  trees as those had been brushed out prior to the trip. I am sure the rails will be scrapped out soon.

My plan is to use E-Z Track for the oval and passing siding of this oval ( not using a double now ) I will be using the E-Z track along back of layout and partially hidden area not convenient to work on. This will be a continuous run section assentially attached behind a few modules. The modules will have On30 Flex Track and probably five blind end sidings. I am thinking I would like to use power routing turnouts for these five and not have to wire and use switches for on/off. My wall is about 10' long that this will be against.

                                                                            marshalling yard
Eventually a non operating logging area will be built over part of the oval.

General Discussion / Power routing turnouts

This has me confused. I have searched the archives and manufactures (Bachmann, Atlas, etc.) and the NMRA and still am uncertain.
Who makes power routing turnouts for DC operation?
If a double oval has power routing turnouts this will determine which oval has power correct?
Can someone explain this in simple terms?

Thank you.

General Discussion / Gauges
October 31, 2008, 08:37:29 AM
Thank you very much Mr. Bob, you are very helpfull. Now where might I find gauges to hardwire to the Control Master 20? I spent some time searching and found nothing, not even at Radio Shack. Strange that MRC does not list these as an option/ add on. The more I learn about electronics the more fun (less confusing) it all is.

Thanks,
Allen

General Discussion / Meters ?
October 30, 2008, 09:19:01 AM
I have a MRC Control Master 20 and would like amp and volt meters to hook up. Where should I look for these? How can these be best used to diagnose troubles ?

Thank you,

I am not impressed with train lenght or number of cars if thats all these and others are attempting. A straight track or or extra large radi curve put together for such an attempt takes away from the effort and glory. I don't know about any others listed here, but the 501 record was EARNED. To use a club layout with curves and grades built with no intent  except to operate trains was a real accomplishment. The planing of # of engines, where to locate them, how and where to wieght the cars took some seriouse planing and that is what impressed me. The others are records, but adding more straight track, power packs, cars, and engines can be done to break "records" over and over. Pick a layout, then try to run 501 train is not so easy. I am just saying what impressed me, my opinion.
Not trying to ruin anybodies fun. I am curious how things came out and under what conditions. Thanks.

Once apon a time in Allegan, Mi. in Allegan Twp, in Allegan Co. there were these:
Kellogg and Sawyer Railroad - (Horse drawn on wooden rails to haul lumber and registered as an official R.R.)
Lake Shore & Michigan Southern (NYC)
           Pere Marquette
Allegan & Southeastern (Steam then Electric)
Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad (Steam then Electric)
Allegan & Lake Shore Railroad (Shay powered logging road)
At one time Allegan Co. had more miles of rail than any county in Michigan

The older (large flanged) IHC 4-6-2  wheels measure 70". The wheel base is 14'-6" axle to axle.

On30 / Re: Why I Like HO Track for On30
May 31, 2008, 08:51:51 AM
Yes/ no? I agee with Harolds statement that no manufactured On30 track is quite write. But I don't care to hand lay track.  Using HO track does not work for me either. I have HO and On30 products so using the same track for both does not visually work for me. I bought into On30 for something different so I want to see something different. I have Micro Engineering track which is not perfect but is different. I would agree with Harold 100% if I did not also model in HO.

What is available for the On30 Climax and Shay ?
If more than one - in order of cost please.

Thank you

General Discussion / DC Momentum
April 12, 2008, 09:14:24 AM
I use DC. I know that useing  momentum causes motors to run warm. I believe it was here that someone said that the new DCC ready Bachmann engines do not like DC momentum. Is this true? Will it hurt anything? Also knowing that DCC creates heat what is the difference in heat or heat?
I have an On30 Shay and two porters and a trolley. The Shay would be of most concern.
Just the facts please. I do not want to debate DC vs. DCC, just the issue of heat and or actual damage.
Thank you.

Yes, I believe several of these wagons/trucks are the same. I asked this board because I do not have any yet. Most of you in this topic are way more knowledgable than I on this topic.

Thanks
