Not sure how old it is but some of the newer 0-6-0s with smoke have an on/off switch which is located in the cab - check the instructions.
If not you might want to contact the service department to see if they can help.

This is NOT true. There are no electronics issues with the EM-1.

The Northern has been redesigned since the 80's and the parts needed to repair it are no longer available. You can call the service department to confirm this but I'm pretty sure that's the case with this loco.

ALCO1000 - If you are having an issue with a Bachmann product you should contact the Bachmann service department and they will be happy to help. Bachmann moderators keep an eye on the forum to make sure everyone is being civil and respecting each other and they cannot be expected to have the answer to every question - that's the service depatments job.

Bachmann only sells locomotives equipped with Bluetooth - no separate boards. That being said, you can check out Blue Rail Trains who produce the same boards for separate sale.

The key word here is "Pleasure" - enjoy yourself and don't take it too seriously!

All DCC decoders have common wiring protocols - at least those that conform to the NMRA suggestions. Each wire on the adapter board is marked with identification lettering such as M+ (motor positive), M- (Motor negative), etc....
All you need to do to use the adapter board ( the one with all the wires on it) is match the lettering on the wires to the spot on your decoder that is labeled the same. Doesn't hurt to have a set of instructions for the decoder you choose to install so that it is easy to match the wires to the proper socket on the decoder. Most large scale decoders feature small sockets to screw the wires into so it's easy.The adapter board is designed to mate a non 21 pin decoder to the 21 pin socket on the Bachmann interface board in the coal bunker.
Use the adapter board with the wires to adapt your decoder of choice to the 21 pin interface in the Bachmann loco.

Parts for most locomotives that are more than 20 years old are out of production. Most older models have been redesigned and therefore parts are not interchangeable. Most folks look for old models at train shops and train shows if they really want to fix the old locomotive.
