On30 / rail truck crapped out
October 22, 2011, 02:47:14 PM
Well after three other On30 engines had gear failure, now the rail truck went kaput. >:(

Sure would like to have an On30 engine that will run without having a short life span.

If I can't find a good running On30 engine soon, I'll have to put everything on eBay and just run my large scale stuff. At least in large scale there are other manufactures to chose from. Actually I have a few Bachmann large scale engines and no problems with them at all except for the first batch of Shays. Why can't they get On30 right as far as engines ?

Since eBay has decided to charge (GREED) 9% even on top of shipping too plus Pay Pal then charges 3% on what's left, many are leaving or not selling on eBay.  It's the pits to try to list and have to allow for the fees on shipping when they take $1.20 out of say $10.00 for shipping.  I have had a few people ask my why I charge so much for shipping for the On30 stuff I sell on eBay and after explaining eBay fee of 9% on shipping, they then understand.

On30 / Re: Bending a strait switch
June 20, 2011, 11:14:28 PM
You can bend a straight switch somewhat but ties need to be loose from each other or at least quite a few and very slowly bend the rail keeping it in gauge.. I actually removed a number of plastic ties and used wood ties there after to fasten the rail down with spikes.  If you don't, the rail always wants to return to it's original position especially if you bend it a lot.

Another is to buy the Tru-Scale switch kits. Of course you will need various lengths of ties to do the job.

Hope springs eternal.

Besides, if you don't ask, you can never hear yes!

Now if Bachmann would just produce the much requested H......!

I'm really starting to wonder as it has been so long that many have asked for this engine that no one from Bachmann has even said , yes or no even a maybe?

Most of the smaller engines will fit the new Bachmann Turntable too according to their ad on page 5 MRR June.

On30 / Re: Any New ETA for On30 Porters?
May 16, 2011, 08:44:28 PM
When I passed 70 years old a number of years back, I then said the same thing as now.  Ain't holding my breath for a pie in the sky dream from manufacture's announcements. Gave up on the Heisler long ago but then I not too thrilled about fixing the Shay and others that have gear problems. >:(

I really don't care if they quit making anything else in On30 as I have too much more than I can run any way.

Of course IF a Heisler did come along and was proven to be a winner without problems, I'll consider one or two.

Barry's Big Trains manufactures a replacement chassis for the Big Haulers. See:

http://www.barrysbigtrains.com/

His replacement power train really solves all running problems with these well detailed locomotives, including the surging. It turns Bachmann's great, low cost engine into a long life, very high performance locomotive.

Hey Tom

I have several new cab kits from Banta to backdate or change all of my other B-man engines.  Might change two Davenports into one larger one as in the latest magazine I received. Hardly run trains as I build buildings and modify engines. Many projects in the fire.

Case solved.  After the three screws holding the cab were removed and some of the plumbing removed, I put a clamp on the sides of the cab near the tabs. Slowly tightening the clamp, the tab on one side moved in far enough to be in the opening to drop through. Little bit of wiggling and the cab came off.  Hurray..    Oh !  Someone might like to know why I wanted the cab off ?  I am using a T-2101 Wood Long Cab from Banta Model Works.  Back dates the engine quite a bit.

Hey Tom

I did take the screws out but now I'm looking at the three lugs.  It looks like one by it's self should be pushed in so the cab could come off ? I suppose it wouldn't matter if one of the lugs broke off ?

I have used Peco HO track outdoors and it is UV protected.  Never a problem.  Might help when using other brands to put a thin strip of tape on the rails then spray with UV coating. Remove the tape and that's it.
