General Discussion / Re: EZ-Track turnouts
October 16, 2010, 06:01:01 PM
Recommend EZ NS track #44513 (4 pack of 2.25" straight track sections).  All are pre-scored for snapping off angled sides and fitting with larger turnouts.

Understand and greatly appreciate the info/warning.

With the appropriate I/O connector cable, can an extra EZ Command Control Center (#44902) be connected in series with  a Walk-Around Companion (#44907) already connected to another powered #44902 which is connected to the track,  for a total of three controllers?

Thanks,

Do you mean Ollie's Bargain Outlets or are these different stores?
Thanks,

General Discussion / Re: Railfanning Fostoria, Ohio
January 31, 2010, 04:22:14 PM
I guess they removed the portapotty for construction.  It was right next to an old building which is apparently now gone.  My grandson and I haven't been up there since last summer.  Hopefully they'll have something for railfans by the end of this year.  It all depends on whether they have enough funding available to proceed with building.  My wife, grandson, and I contribute toward that funding with our annual membership dues in the Fostoria Rail Preservation Society (FRPS)

Trainsrock,

Thanks for the photos.  How long did it take you to see 24 trains?
Sorry you were disappointed by Fostoria.  I don't think anybody said the railpark existed yet in replies to your message,  so I'm not quite sure why you expected one and are upset you didn't find one.
What you found may indicate that old building demolition has been completed and grounds preparation for the park are apparently being done after many years of planning.  Hopefully that's the case.  BTW, that empty "wasteland" you saw used to be an overgrown junkyard with large derelict buildings.

HO / Re: Best steam loco to use?

Another vote for the Spectrum HO 2-8-0.  Got one in 2004 with DCC/sound and it can still outrun almost all my other engines ( a lot).  My grandson loves the 2-8-0 because it can easily negotiate all turn radii, including 15".    Good puller too.

Please see response #5.  Radio frequencies are on scanner link.  Also, good map at http://www.trainorderpix.com/FostoriaMap.htm

Scanning:  http://www.greatlakeslive.com/fostoria.html - CSX and NS
Railfanning and railpark info:  http://www.fostoriairontriangle.com

My grandson and I have railfanned in Fostoria many times during the last five years.  Our favorite site(s) are on the northeast side of Columbus Ave just south of the CSX (old C&O) and NS (old NKP) double diamond and across the street from the planned railpark.   Last summer, a portapotty was in place at the railpark site.  Amtrak no longer stops in Fostoria, but can't beat the freight traffic!

Have a great time!

General Discussion / Re: DCC system recommendation

Another vote for the MRC Prodigy Advance 2 (Squared).  After 3 good years with EZ Command,  we moved up to more advanced system for my grandson's and my temporary EZ track layouts.  Prodigy works fine.   Still use EZ Command for checking out new locos or with 5 amp booster when my grandson and I are running different layouts.  He likes freight and I like passenger ops.   We both really liked simplicity of EZ Command starting out and we also find Prodigy very user friendly for busy ops and multiple loco consists.

Hi JC,

I use EZ Command and EZ track with multiple turnouts.  I use an MRC Railpower 1300 Model Train Powerpack for HO and N gauge) to power all the turnouts with the "Accessories AC" connections.  I bought mine new five years ago for @$25.00.  MRC and other manufacturers, including Bachmann, make other DC powerpacks with AC connections which should work fine with your turnouts.   You don't need anything expensive to run turnouts.

Good Luck,

General Discussion / Re: Bachmann #5 turnout

JRT is right.  The scoring is on the short (2 1/4") that came with the turnout.  In case that one's defective, Bachmann EZ track item #44513 is a pack of four 2 1/4" straights, all of which have scoring for use with EZ track's larger turnouts or other cramped track situations.

Good luck!

As the Bach Man says, it's easy to short out (and permanently kill) the EZ Command if you plug the power cord into the wall  first before the track connector, especially if the track connector touches the I/O port first.  It's easy to do so please don't be too hard on your mother-in-law.  Please don't ask me how I know this.  I taped over the I/O port on the replacement unit to prevent it from happening again.  And I now ALWAYS make all connections to the unit before plugging into wall outlet.

If the EZ Command is still under warranty, mail to Bachmann for replacement.

My grandson and I love the EZ Command.  It (and EZ track) got us both into model railroading and DCC several years ago.   Although we've moved up to MRC Prodigy Advance, we still use the EZ Command to check out  DCC/sound locos and to run small "side" operations.  I also bought an extra for him to take to Illinois University where he's a member of his Engineering school railroad club and used his EZ Command to run trains in a Rube Goldberg competition.

Good luck and Happy Railroading to you and your son!

General Discussion / Re: hallmark Train Ornaments
July 25, 2009, 07:57:51 AM
We place our Hallmark ornaments, and other train miniatures, on short pieces of either Z scale or N scale sectional track, whichever fits better with the miniature size.  Then we display them on our fireplace mantel or other areas around the house on the holidays.  We leave the hook loops on them.
