Good Afternoon All,

With Mr. B's permission,   I want to share with you some good news from Athearn.    They will be offering the Ford,  Model A pickup trucks,  roadsters and sedans that they currently make in HO scale.  The scale will be 1/50 scale,  much closer to O scale(1/48) than 1/43  Orders should be placed in August and they expect to have them available to the public in November.
To me this is GREAT news as I am always on the look for vehicles etc that are not 1/43 scale.

Great news indeed! I was hoping Athearn would do just that, but in 1/48 scale, not that goofy1/43 or 1/50 stuff. Most scale model railroaders in O scale are Americans after all and work in 1/48.

I suppose the Lionel toy crowd would be happy though to have something from the 40's and 50's to place alongside their giraffe and aquarium cars.

I wonder if Athearn or Atlas would possibly consider doing On30 rolling stock and locos. Hope springs eternal in model railroading, after all.

Much thanks with the help. I too was wondering how to do that.

For those of you who read the General Topics I apologize for the duplicate thread.  As I only received two responses, perhaps I should have posted here instead?  I am looking for comments/opinions on operating On30 outdoors.  My normal indoors railroading is done in HO, but I have a good friend in On30 who is encouraging me to switch scales.  He recently purchased one of those 2-4-4 Forneys and I think it is a really nice locomotive.  Anyway, all thoughts on this project would be appreciated.

Regards,

John

It's been done in the past with O standard, John. And there was even someone who did it with HO once. So no reason why it cannot be done in On30. If you live where the ground freezes, make sure you dig deep enough for support pilings or whatever you intend to get below the frost heave level. Let us know how it goes. It may get me off my butt and outside in the fresh air.

Good Evening All,

This past Wednesday was a red letter day.   The final wiring was done and the entire out and back mainline on my On30 railroad is fully operational.

Excellent, Bob. Are you planning a "Golden Spike" ceremony? ;D

Hey evryone. Does anyone know where I can find detail parts for On30 Steam locomotivs? The area I'm modeling is the late 19th century.(1880's)
I'm looking for box headlights, wood pilots, and those "Old Fasioned" smoke stacks. Someone please help me?

You could try checking out dealers at: http://o.webring.com/hub?ring=on30webring for what they have in stock.

Hey there. here is an idea for coloring thoses counterweights. If you can draw well draw a side view of the 2-8-0. Make a few copies of it just to be safe. If you don't draw well see if you can find some plans of the 2-8-0.(one of Bachmann's catologs had a good one) Useing the drawings or plans as a guide, devise your own color scheme. If you mess up, thats what the copies are for. Hope I helped some.

An excellent idea. I make copies of my turnouts on a copier, then cut them out to use in planning a railroad. But never thought of using that system for planning loco and rolling stock.

The NCE PowerCab system is compatible with all Decoders From any
manufacturer.  The PowerCab system is a full featured system.

As for a decoder for the 2-8-0 check this site.

http://www.tcsdcc.com/decoderpics/Bachman%20N%20scale%202-8-0/bachman_n_scale_2_8_0.htm

Sound might be possible with one of the LokSound decoders.
They make one of the smallest sound decoders available.  (Expensive)

You could also try: http://www.tonystrains.com/tonystips/2006/101206.htm for some decoders. Also, in the future - Tony has N Scale locos with DCC decoders installed, if you have the big bucks: http://tonystrains.com/tonystips/2001/122101.htm

I use Woodland Scenics "roadbed" which represents ballast. Set up your track, outline it with a pencil, then glue the ballast strips down. Glue down the track then and you will have very quiet operation except for the nice sound of metal wheels on railjoints and if you have sound-equipped locos, it sounds really good. Be sure to keep the glue away from the moving parts of the turnouts.

On30 / Re: ON30 Micro Engineering Turnouts
June 14, 2007, 06:30:35 PM
My two turnouts also just arrived this afternoon, and after performing a perfunctory examination, have found them just what I wanted. I like the snap-action and all dimensions seem fine. Slightly deep wheel flanges do not hit the "spike heads". I too was surprised by the length of the turnouts but not by the quality since ME flex track is probably the best around. I guess I will not have to lay my own, which will save a lot of time and cussing. Good work, Micro Engineering.

By the way, any ideas from anyone out there on how best to weather the track and turnouts? ME has some ideas included with the turnouts, but I would be interested in other methods.

On30 / Confusion re: Bachmann Consolidation?
May 27, 2007, 07:52:53 PM
This was posted today on Tony's Trains:

"A friend of mine recently bought a Bachmann Consolidation with sound. He was expecting the sound to be a QSI decoder and was surprised when he found out it was a Soundtraxx Tsunami.

Tsunamis will run on DC with preset automated sound functions. These sounds cannnot be controlled from a DC throttle. The sounds are automated preset sound functions and need to be tweaked (CVs) with a DCC system, to match the specific DC power pack in use. Sometimes the results are good, and with other power packs the performance, including start speed, is marginal at best.

The Tsunami does not have an analog control device like QSI's "Quantum Engineer" that provides for analog control for all the popular sound functions.

Bachmann has indicated in their generic Sound on Board advertising that they have partnered with Soundtraxx and use Tsunami decoders. However in some of their recent locomotive specific advertising with Sound on Board, Bachmann does not specify which brand of sound decoder is installed in their products. Neither do retailers of their product."

I have bought several locos from Tony's and have never been confused as to what brand of sound decoder is installed in their locomotives. In fact, if you go to Tony's website and look at their listing for Bachmann's 2-8-0 and click on "configuration", you will see that it has, all along, always spelled out that it is equipped with Tsunami's. This reminds me of that old cartoon in Model Railroader with a guy returning his "Shake the box, easy to build" locomotive, complaining that he could not get the box open. Sheesh, guys. Get a life.

So far, only Forneys are sound equipped.
Have fun!

Actually, Tony's Trains has some 2-8-0s available with Tsunami sound installed. See http://tonystrains.com/locomotive/bachmann.htm and hope he has not run out of them yet. I got one a while back and it is awesome.

Well, neither answer is correct.  The difference between On30 (0.65") and On3 (0.75") is 0.10", which is equal to 4.8 inches in 1/48 scale.  On30 gauge is actually 31.2 inches in 1/48 scale.

Cheers, Ken
