I think Roundhouse makes some very nice cars from that era..in particular wood sided billboard reefers.

I'm in Montreal...and the last time I checked we use the exact same current, voltage as the USA...oh...yeah we sell a ton of the stuff to New England.....anyways...I model both UK and US and they all run just fine out of the box on my layout.... ;D

Start by making sure the wheels and track are clean and that the pick-ups are correctly adjusted and making good contact with the wheels

I'm in Montreal , have been modelling UK trains for about 10 years and am also a member of a british model railway club here. I also do most of my ordering from Hattons and i highly recommend them., usually takes about 4 days for an order to arrive here....there are other shops in the UK that are also good for online ordering...SWdigital for UK sound decoders as an example, Olivias Trains is pretty good also.
Some shops do not deduct the VAT off of your cost...but Hattons definitely do deduct it.

I tend to stick with Bachmann products  but Hornby do have some excellent locos and goods(freight)wagons.  Heljan also do some very good UK locos.

Good Luck

HO / Re: Factory decoder reset for RS3, GP9 and FA2?
August 03, 2013, 03:30:39 PM
I'm having a similar problem with my RS3 sound on board...the bell button makes the horn go, the horn button makes the bell ring and all the other sound effects are gone.....tried resetting using CV8 to 8 but it did not make any difference.  And yes most of the Bachmann locos I buy are grossly over-greased.
Anybody have suggestions?

I think they are all either Dcc ready or Dcc equipped. No smoke-units that I am aware of.

.
I don't think you need to worry about overheating the decoder, I work my 2-6-0 much harder than this (heavy grades, long runs, long trains) and never have had any issue with decoder shut down.

Is it a sound decoder?
#53
I think mine would have pulled a couple of more than the 12 it did...but I've noticed that sound decoders seem to get hotter when the sound is turned on...that with pulling too many cars worries me that it might overheat with possible bad consequences. I'm satisfied with it pulling 8-9 cars as a switcher.

I was able to pull 11 freight cars and 1 caboose around the club layout no problem.....but I was concerned the decoder might overheat so I limit it to 8 cars and a caboose now.

excellent...are you going to dissect the faulty truck and see if you can figure out what was causing the noise???
#56
OK...was the thumping there before the sound was installed? Im wondering if its being caused by some part of the sound installation...a wire touching a moving part or the decoder or speaker interfering with something.
I just ran my Doodlebug...I had installed a non-sound decoder in it when I got it last year...definately doesn't have that thumping sound. Id be very suspicious about something of the decoder or speaker system in yours interferring with the running gear OR just somehow magnifying the volume of a previously unnoticeable sound. Ill be interested to hear about your solution.

You have run it with the body off and as much of the workings exposed as possible...right?
#58
Well sounds like you got a real mystery on your hands.

Ok...go to this link.    http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/157193.aspx.       and check posts #6 and 7.....maybe this loose clip thingy is your problem if the gears aren't cracked

I saw something yesterday about the cap on the truck housing, inside the body being loose and causing noise.....I'll try and find the article and post the link here for you
