General Discussion / Re: Storing Spectrum Steam Engines
February 28, 2008, 12:45:41 PM
As for just storing them connected I was lucky to find a couple of 16" microphone box's that the locos fit perfectly ,just added 1/4" soft foam .
and store them upright. Nice soft bed for my new BLI Santa Fe 2-10-2

There are the little black mold pieces on the inside of the wheel on the axle.  Is that what you mean?

I never knew to check to see if all the wheels were turning.  I found out today when I started to hear a squealing.

Yer learnin' kiddo ! ;D

HO / Re: Coupler conversion advice?

Johnson bar

One other thing you'll need in case you don't already have one is a Kadee coupler height gauge. alot of us will mount 2 of them facing each other about 12 to 15 inchs apart.that way you need not have to pick up and turn the car /engine around while checking the coupler heights on either end.

Jus' my 2 bits ;D

You might also try putting a mild spring on on your lead truck ,that would give a bit of lift to the front of your engine.

Were could I find a..."R2"...?

alex
Athough there were numerous runs produced The Great Northern R1- R2s are only available as brass imports. these were made by  Pacific Fast Mail, Oriental and Key imports.
These models  often show on Ebay but unfortunely they will useally go for $1000-$2000. and rare is the one that goes for below $800.

I was extremly lucky to find one at a swapmeet needing major repairs that I could afford.

Reminds me of a story..  ;)
Ins. salesman had a rather large office with 8 to ten employee's most were women. Said salesman also loved Lionel trains and put up around the bldg. several hundred feet of track fairly high on the walls so as to enjoy......HIS TRAINS!
Going from room to room was no problem as he just cut holes in the walls and slapped tunnel portals on'em.....this included the restrooms, guessing where i'm goin' with this?
Yep'every time a women either employee or customer'didn't much matter went to the facility ....here came a steamer charging through the bathroom with its whistle just a'wailing.... ;D

HO / Re: Bachman steam engine wiring
January 21, 2008, 09:31:47 PM
Have a Spectrum 2-10-0 which besides adding weight to the tender  found gluing a very small piece of styrene across the extreme rear of the frame held the wires up and kept them from dragging on the ties.
Another tip" those wires are extremely fragile and if at all possible its best to leave them connected. In my wanderings around work I found  a handful of new microphone boxs that were being discarded.
HAH! perfect fit for loco and tender....semi-permanently connected....
Caution: the drawbar pins on the new locomotive tenders are plastic.....handle gently ;D
