HO / Re: HO set "Golden Spike" item # 46222
November 03, 2008, 09:37:50 AM
Hello Dad_bjr ,

The Golden Spike set has been in our product line for many years under several item numbers. I looked through our catalog archives and could not find the Golden Spike set with that item number.  It is possible that it was a special set for a store or private catalog.

I started with 1989 and worked backwards.  We did not print item numbers or prices in some of the older catalogs.  The 1986 catalog listed item number 40-175 The Golden Spike set at a suggested retail of $59.00.

It included a UP GP-40 loco, a Great Northern blue flat car with logs, a yellow Chessie System box car, a silver Southern gondola, a SP red box car (could be the mechanical reefer that you mentioned, I cannot tell from the photo or description) and a UP center cupola caboose.

That's all the info I could find.

For prices I would recommend searching completed auctions on eBay. That will give you its true value.  I will try to research the year it was prodcued next week and will post info if I find something.

Hello:

Can you be a little more specific.  What would you like to know about the set?

Hi Dominic,

We will determine the roadnames when we assemble the new catalog for each year.  I cannot say that you will see Road X every three years or a set timetable.

As far as the preorder system many hobbyists are no longer pre-ordering so if we depended on pre-orders, you might never see certain roadnames.  I have found that most orders are received after the item is in stock.

Hi CMB,

We will rotate the prior roadnames, but we do not have a set timetable for rotating the roadnames.  The best time to find the FEC trains would be now.   There are still dealers out there with inventory from last year's catalog.  I will send you some suggestions by email off board.

Mike,

Delivery for Christmas -  it is going to be close.  If the info I have right now remains true they will make it.  No dome planned right now,  and we cannot make a dome observation without making new molds.

Dear Harry,

Try running your locomotive for 15 minutes or so at a rate of speed fast enough so that is does not stall on the switches.  Immediately take it off of the track and touch each of the rollers.  If one of the is not connected it will be cooler to touch than the other one.  If this is the case the wire is either bad or disconnected.  Sometimes bad connections are "hidden" under the shrink tubing.  The connection at the roller end is the most likely culprit.  Re-solder and cover the connection with new shrink tubing or electrical tape.  If you cannot repair, send into our service department.

Hi Hobo,

We usually don't stock just the wheel sets.  We have complete trucks available in our service department.
