well considering tooling costs and the market, I'd suspect Bachmann is trying to use the Spectrum name for State-of-the-art releases while using aging spectrum molding for their standard line. This has been happening for a few years now with engines like the 2-8-0

I model 26 inch to 33 inch radius curves for my modern rocky mountain mallets, of course I should add it's all on a 10' x 18' banquet table setup(for now I'm in development of a module system)

I used to use a lot of 22 inch radius as a minimum but found it hindered my ability to run larger engines(twice the length of  the Berkshire) and lengthy passenger cars. Broader curves allow for more realistic mainline run where 18 inch radius and 22 inch radius is more suitable for branchline routes. But realism aside, its your railroad and you can have 22 inch radius as a mainline as well :) I would advise you go slightly larger than a 4' x 8' layout and go with a 5' x 9' or 5' x 10' layout to comfortably run track around.

Hope this helps!

sounds like a plan! Just figured they would have listed parts for the mogul before they did the K-4 :D

I agree with Trainman 203.

Undec steam always sold out first.

The decision by the so called "expert" sales "suits" was a poor one and should be rescinded  ASAP.

Bring back undecs!!!!!!!!

I will have to agree here, Undecorated models always sold out way before actual roadnames did. Sort of how the Undec models go for more money on the bay. It's hard to overlook actual results.

Wow thanks for all the help. Yep, that's the photo of the 340 in Malden I couldn't copy or print it.  Aslo, thanks for the tip about the Mogul in Pine Bluff Museum.

I may just go ahead and get an Alco 2-6-0 for now.  I've never tried kitbashing on a locomotive and as much as I would like to stay authenic I would probably mess it up.

...so,ok Bachmann we have some takers here including myself.....when can we expect to see delivery on a Baldwin D3 2-6-0 mogul?

May I suggest a Precision Scale Co. HO scale steam locomotive brass detail catalog, it comes in handy for kitbashers, also the Bachmann Parts catalog is also a wonderful resource when their stuff is in stock.

Now THERE is something the Bach Man ought to build for us!

If Bachmann made these I wouldn't mind a couple :)

Looking at this engine, the Bachmann alco is aesthetically a completely different animal:

boiler is bigger, sits higher, no valve gear, cylinders are different as well, the domes are different, there's another 'sand dome'(I believe), the rear driver is space further from the second set, the smokebox door is flatter, and that's what I can come up with for now.

The deal killer for me is the rear driver spacing or else this engine is a pretty darn close match if you can kitbash/modify the rest of the details. But this is Model Railroading, and you're free to even imagine your own equipment but if you're anything like me, you want the look and feel of that certain prototype that you're interested in. I'd say go for it. I can't think of anything close in brass other than SP 2-6-0's(even those would need extensive work)

Hey, Jonathon, did you get one of the new Mikes?  If so, have you had it apart?  Curious if the domes are separate or cast into the boiler.  I think the sand dome is about 6 scale inches too tall, and might contemplate replacing it if it isn't too big a hassle.

I had inquired about this in an earlier post, and the official answer is they're cast onto the boiler not separate... the exploded parts diagrams also show this..

Though I wish bachmann would do separately applied domes as it would help customization a great deal not to mention bachmann can market a lot more prototypes this way with a variety of details... ehhh one can dream. :-\

I've been slowly getting more into complicated areas of modeling outside of kitbashing steam, like decaling and customizing buildings now and who knows what I'll get myself into next, I feel like custom cars might be the next thing to delve into ;D

from the looks of that, a USRA 0-6-0 which some modification(smokebox door remade, running boards relocated and a clear vision tender) should suffice

DoctorWayne,

I don't often post on here due to time constraints however I always look forward to seeing your inspirational work you post on these forums among others.

I really like how you illustrated the way you've used simple styrene and built a chassis straight off from it, or the fabricated roof hatches.

I may have to get a couple Bachmann Reefers because of the crisp lettering
