HO / Re: Simple decoders?
September 21, 2008, 10:45:15 PM
Thanks to all for the replies.  I have used the DZ123 in most of my locos too.  I figure that by getting small decoders, they will be re-usable if I need them for "Future" installations. I was leaning toward those, I just needed to make sure there were not "others" that had been tried, and were NOT to be used!!
Again, thanks for the replies!!

HO / Simple decoders?
September 21, 2008, 02:31:01 PM
I have successfully taken apart a Rivarossi, 2-8-2, to put a decoder into it.  The unit is really simple, with a Motor and 2 leads for pick-ups.  I want to buy a real basic decoder to run the front headlight, and just the motor.  What is the type of decoder, and cheapest that can be purchased?  Digitrax is preferred, but not necessary.  I use the Bachmann EZ-Command system.

Pacific Northern,
I use the EZ-Command system.  If that is what you mean.
By the way, I also model the UP and GN.

HO / Atlas RS-3 w/DH165AO decoder

Dear All,
I have successfully installed this decoder in this engine.  I there are 2 problems though

1.  The lights turn on the opposite direction the loco is moving?
2.  The lights are REALLY DIM....??

Is this a decoder problem, or did I just do something wrong?  The lights go on and off as they are supposed to (#10 on EZ-Command station).
Thanks for the help!

I had a rock area that I needed done...
I made a mold from a neighbors big "Rock" from his front yard.  I then used "Mountain in Minutes" that I applied and held up to create a rock face.  I peeled the mold off slowly.....  It looks great from the distance.....  I have not colored  the formation yet.  I wish I had taken pictures of this for when I am older.  (To remember the technique.)

Others have used the spray insulation that expands, then they carve the stone to fit....

HO / Crane boom retainer
August 23, 2008, 08:07:50 PM
I have several work trains with cranes and their tenders.  It seems that after several passes on the layout..  The booms move with curves of the track and not with the train!!!  This has caused several mishaps.  How has others corrected this issue?  IT have the boom move with the curves and back again as the track straightens out, or curves in the other direction.  If I leave the booms on the "deck" then it causes the cars to NOT run smoothly, and derail?!!!

Any ideas??

ajp,
Thanks for the info.  I did take off the shell...  It was then that I found a part that pops off on top of the hood??  This hood pops off OVER the 8 pin plug area!!  I put the shell back on..  opened the hood of the other loco...  And presto..  I installed the other decoder in 30 seconds!  I did break off the forward facing horn..  I was in too big of a hurry.
Thanks again!

Thanks,

HO / DCC for Life Like Proto 2000 SD9
August 19, 2008, 02:59:42 PM
Dear All,
I know this is a Bachmann site, and if I could get answers through Walther's I would....

I have 2 Proto 2000 SD9s that I want to install DCC into (Pre-buy out production- 1998?).  I need to know if the motors are Isolated, and how to take off the shells.  I have looked for the original drawings that come with units, but to no avail....

If anyone has the original paperwork, I would ask if you could email it to me.  If someone has already installed decoders into these units, what ones worked, and are there instructions for this...
Thanks for the help!

Gene,
It is a swivel "Looking" pilot front.  I was hoping that someone had completed this conversion before I tried it.  I will have to contact Lionel and see if there are options, before I tear into this beautiful unit.

Thanks for the help!!

Great ideas...

The Velcro idea is a great idea..  That way I will not void any warranties by opening it up.  I use to use Velcro for a lot of things.  I do need a "Shelf" or pocket on the control panel for other things.

Thanks for the help!!
