HO / Bachmann sd40-2 non dynamic brake version?
December 19, 2015, 07:39:04 PM
The Bachmann sd40-2 are all made with dynamic brakes ,but the dynamic brake insert is removable. Are there plans to make a non dynamic brake version of this model and or a insert part available through Bachmann to model a sd40-2 with non dynamic brakes?

I would  also go with the factory sound on board with this one .If your into a little more deep end sound Clarity I would recommend in tight spaces a zimo sugar cube as a series wired second speaker to the original as a assist. They also give a diesels model more thump then if were to use the same size cone type of speaker.

I see. I know Bachmann has a few painted unlettered  Steam engines ,Un-Numbered diesels also. I would by a painted un-lettered diesel  as mentioned prier .Painted un-lettered sure would be a time saver from un-decorated anyway.

un -decorated .Blame it on the computer. Thanks for the refresher.I had a Rivarossi Passenger car I had to strip down and tried using brake fluid,The alcohol method you mentioned and it was impenetrable compared to everything else that normally takes from a few hours or overnight took a week of harsh scrubbing to almost get it all off. What ever paint process they used has to be the strongest I have seen to date. You ever run
across that?

Not sure, why, even as a joke, you'd suggest someone destroy their DC loco by running it on AC, J.A. ???

Now, if you told someone to take a hammer to their pancake motor driven diesel loco, that is a joke I could get into ;)
Did you miss .Been There! I did this my self long ago.Fair warning to others in a way they could understand Smoke is not good unless it is a pancake motor. That is normal thing for them especially if you run some a/c into them like I did .Kind of entertaining at the time.Would never give bad advise purposely Jbrock.

Uae a test light .A multi meter will work ,but will lie to you if there is a corroded rail joiner. The test light for automotive will not lie .IT WILL SHOW DIM on the bad side of the connection and a multi meter will not because the bulb in the test light is the load reading the true current and will find it much more accurately then the multi meter.

Hopefully the track is not connected to the ACCESSORIES 16VAC terminals (push to open, release to close). If it is, that explains why locomotive will not move as the locomotive is equipped with a DC motor.
They will move in a/c for not very long though.MAJIC SMOKE comes to mind .Been there long ago.Try it some time if you think it will not.

I remember also the Spectrum Ge dash 8-40 cw came in a undercoated version and included 3 different cab versions. This had to be in the 90's .They should set aside a few to cater to the few .Its model railroading!Saves a lot of hassle tearing down and stripping paint with chemicals. Is anybody selling undercoated anymore??Athearn is the only one .They are few and far between.Still a few.

HO / Undecorated models

I have noticed that in the past Bachmann made undercorated model locomotives for almost every model available in the past in there diesel line up .Now I  have not seen any produced. Is this something that is gone for good, or do they plan more in the future ?

The seller of this locomotive claims it "ran like a champ" for him before he listed it, so I don't know what to think here.

Perhaps a long time passed between running and listing?

Maybe.... ???
Yes its call a new old stock restoration.Had many I guess it sat in some stock room where the grease dried all up and was like putty or what he said .So when your done consider it had built by yourself .By the way check the side rods and lube all the joints.carry tissue to immediately soak the excess up.Make sure the side rods and valve gear linkage are inline not bent or hitting each other causing a lock up of the drivers.Sounds like you have a plus or a Spectrum dhave fun with it and pace yourself .

They were sold in A/B  set draw bared together to generate reasonable power to pull .Alone they would not have enough pop to win over the railroads and prove the diesel could run the main lines over Steam with there power and efficiency for less cost and maintenance. The story of how they evolved with all the experimental locos since is quite remarkable ,just as steam from its infancy .

Hunt you the the Man. I also learned dealing with a communication issue between the base and the handheld that if you unplug the base with things powered up it will show short on the handheld meaning that it is reading something between the two.We had some issues communication where the lights were on solid ,but commands to the trains were delayed then would not respond, ended up being a natural thing from the son infrared interference.Blocking the outside light fixed it .

most of my locomotives are two truck diesels. to clean the wheels, I soak a paper towel in alcohol, place it on the rails with one truck of the locomotive on the towel, and turn up the power all the way while holding the locomotive in place. once the first truck is clean, I repeat with the other truck.

I also use this method ,but care must be taken paying close attention to SPARKS! Using 90% Alcohol the spark jumped to the paper towel that had the 90% on it Luckily it was not done on the layout and on a short piece of powered test track. It lit up.I had done this method many times without a problem .Only takes once as a reminder that it can light!
