Knuckle couplers are fast becoming the N scale standard, if they aren't already. Even though Bachmann's N scale knuckle couplers are oversize, they should be able to be easily replaced.

Why not take the ones from the J-class or the new EM-1 locomotives?

I might do that.

This is a stock Bachmann decoder that comes with all DCC-equipped steam locomotives. It's not marked per NMRA standards.

Here's a good place to start.

Thanks, but those manuals do nothing. I have the first manual. I don't think you understand what I'm asking. I'm not asking for decoder board installation solder points, I'm asking which wires coming from the DECODER are which, since they are not color-coded.

N / Bachmann DCC Decoder Question
January 27, 2014, 10:53:09 AM
I have an old Bachmann/Lenz DCC decoder that I took out of my 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain. However, I want to reinstall it without paying money for another decoder. When looking at the top of the black heat wrap, there is some writing on it. If I untangle all of the wires, so that each one comes straight out of the decoder, which wires are which? In other words, which wires go to motor, pickup, lights, etc. when looking at the decoder from the top?

Wow, that's tough. Might want to look at photos of EM-1s because that would be tough to quarter.

Wait a minute. I'm looking at those pictures and there is no front black plastic bearing block holding the part of the motor shaft in front the worm gear.
#279
Yeah, when I get another 0-6-0 or a cheap Prairie, I will try again.

Sonofa....

Lost the front motor plastic bearing block in front of the worm gear. Now it won't go back together quite like it did before I took it apart. Have to order another one.

I found the isometric diagram for the engine. Apparently wire three is an AUX function. In this particular engine, it's a dimming function for the headlights. Never saw that before in a stock Bachmann decoder. Pretty cool.

Yeah I know. I have two Model Power Pacifics. I love them.

I have tried Trainworld, BLMW, and they have them in stock, however, when I bought mine back earlier in 2013, I bought it from TW at $75. The best price I've seen is on TW at $149.

I've been there, but his is straight DC. No one to my knowledge has converted this engine to DCC, or at least posted pictures of it.
