IMHO
Turntables are way out of spec for layouts that size
They completely dominate the layout and overwhelm the mainline

But that is just me

I am not a fan of a lot of sidings/ turntables on small layouts

I know people like to display all their stock but I mainly want to see them run

I run the IHC Mogul on the ME&O  depending on what rolling stock I use
It has decent detail and runs great
You can find them on EBAY once in a while

Here is a pic of mine

Yeah the 2-8-0 is a good choice
So is a USRA 2-8-2

Both of mine run the inside 18 with no problems and the nice thing is both engines can be used from the 1920s right up to the end of steam around 58-59

I have plexiglass around the outside of my layout
Easy to drill and local glass shop cut them to 6" widths

2 pics
I run only 2 ovals 18-22 on a 4X10

As you can see I did away with my interior sidings
I decided I only want to see them run and don't car about switching etc
My staging is in a home built cabinet that fits underneath the layout and 2 power supplies sit on top
I can change out both ovails in less than 10-15 minutes which I do usually every other day

Yeah I learned real quick about adding the plexiglass especially since klutzy me  can knock them on the floor without a derailment  ;D

Here is a pic of my 22 and 18 with 2 sidings off the inside 18

You can see it fits the 48" wide plywood alright
A work in progress with no ballast or scenery yet

I don't even run 50 fters on my 22

I think sticking with 40 is better and there are plenty of 40 fters or less out there including gondolas -ore cars and coal hoppers

Funny thing though I can run my Berk on the 22 and it looks ok  and the -Northern even looks acceptable

The only passenger cars that don't look weird on the 22 are the early Overland types which can be run as a fan fare type set up

So I would say you are limited to freight on the 22 and 18

If you have the old Bachmann 484 it is junk and not worth much except in a display case

The newer DCC model should be OK  Mine runs real well

I run 2 ovals 18 and 22 on my 4x10
No problem getting the 22 as long as you don't want outside sidings which I don't

My main pleasure is watching them run not seeing how much stock I can have on sidings etc

I personally think the GP9s SD9s are completely bland looking with no character

Curious as to why the 2-8-8-2

PRR only had 6

Can't you use other PRR steamers on your layout

Why would it be strictly 2-8-8-2 or is it just because you really like that PRR steamer

Must be a manufacturing defect
Mine have holes at each end and in the middle
