HO / Re: Harry Potter HO Train set

Try the Bachmann Service department. Just order the parts and repair it yourself, and if you wanted you could order enough parts to build a completely new engine.

Atlas does make/sell the QSI Quantum Express because they still use QSI sound decoders.
#243
If you look at the Soundtraxx manuals, when operating a DCC Sound equipped locomotive, the sounds are all AUTOMATIC meaning the sounds like the whistle and bell activate when the decoder detects a change in the settings of the controller such as direction.
#244
Unfortunately they can't be triggered manually. They trigger automatically when certain adjustments are made to the throttle or direction. For example, when you change direction, the decoder will trigger the appropriate signal. Two blasts for forward or three for reverse or when you decrease the throttle, the decoder will trigger the brake squeal and if you decrease throttle slow enough, a single whistle blast signifying the train is stopping. Hope the info helps.

If it is the gear on the drive wheels, you could order a new set of GS-4 drive wheels from Bachmann's Service Department and replace them yourself. If it is a different gear, find a local hobby shop near you that is authorize to do repairs and bring it to them.

Thomas & Friends / Re: Gordon's coaches

I would try a flat or semi-gloss testors or floquil paint. You would have a nice selection of Testors paints or a nice selection of different shades of green from Floquil. I would also look at getting a plastic model primer. Tape off where you don't want to paint, spray the plastic model primer, let that dry and cure, and paint with the coat of green.

My suggestions as far as what colors to look for, I would have to say a nice semi-gloss dark green from Testors or maybe a semi-gloss Great Northern Empire Green. Again those are just my suggestions, but those would probably give you the best results.

HO / Re: NEW 2-6-0 disassembly and extra sounds

I wouldn't doubt that disassembling the new ALCO 2-6-0 won't be much different from taking the 2-8-0 body shell off. A screw at the back under the cab and a tab at the front or pulling the stairs at the front out of the smoke-box.

HO / Re: 4-8-4's

They did and still do You can find it in the HO Scale Overland Set. It isn't DCC or DCC ready. It is just a straight DC engine with smoke. And my thinking behind the UP FEF-3 class 4-8-4's like the 844 and the Milwaukee Road S-3 class 4-8-4's like the Milwaukee Road 261 is Bachmann has done a few restored steam engines like from the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement, the SP 4449 (in both "Railfan Daylight" and American Freedom Train versions) and N&W 611; from the 2-10-0 catagory, the Frisco 1630; from the 2-8-4 catagory, the PM 1225 and the NKP 765 and 759; and from the 2-10-2 class (even though it doesn't run) the DM&IR #506 (static display in the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, WI) and I just figured since lionel came out with the 261 in O scale recently, it was time for someone to make the 261 in HO scale and Athearn hasn't made the FEF Northerns of the UP in a while and it is almost impossible to find them and if you do they are expensive.

HO / Re: 4-8-4's

We need more ALCO engines like the Union Pacific 844 or the Milwaukee Road 261. the 844 would be a big seller anywhere but the 261 would be something nobody has ever done in HO scale. Overland years back did the Milwaukee Road S-2 class 4-8-4's but nobody has done the Milwaukee Road S-3 class 4-8-4's (The class of 4-8-4 the Milwaukee Road 261 is from).

Try going to Ehattons.com and find it there. They typically always have a picture of the engine in question next to a ruler.

I saw 2 Bachmann S4s from a club member, they can haul 22 cars no problem out of the box, but going up a good sized hill with no running start, they stalled right at the top. my Bachmann 2-8-0 can haul a 20 car train up the same hill at 75 throttle. I'd say its a bit less than 2 percent grade. Technically, you can run a S4 backwards and forwards. The RS3 was built with its cab moved up a bit for better visibility going long hood forward, so that could also be ran forwards or backwards... heck, I've seen a Dash 8 and a High hood SD40-2 from a yard job that they didn't bother turning around go long hood forward from berea ohio to Bellevue ohio. Sure it must've been pretty awkward... but its prototypical.

I've never owned or ran a Bachmann RS-3 (would've loved to own 3 Southerns... i can dream, can't i?) but i know that the Bachmann GP7 is a great puller, matches up with a bachmann 4-8-4 or bachmann 2-8-0 no problem.

I once saw a CN freight in Michigan that was a short train with 3 big what appeared to be SD-50's, 60's or 70's with a standard wide nose and the lead unit was running long hood first. Until then, I had never seen a large diesel run that way.

HO / Re: DCC Train set help
December 19, 2011, 10:58:56 AM
For DCC sets you can go with a Bachmann set with a DCC engine or in the case of the Digital Commander set two  DCC engines or if you want a set with an engine with DCC and Sound you can go with one of MTH's Proto Sound 3 equipped sets with an F3 two freight cars, a caboose and a loop of track and the MTH DCS remote commander. What you go with all depends what YOU want in a train set. Basically, make a list of what it is you want in a DCC equipped set and look at various DCC equipped train sets and see what has what you want and narrow it down from there.

Otherwise, if you just want a Bachmann one and you are just getting started with DCC and don't have a DCC controller, look at a bachmann one that comes with a Bachmann DCC controller. The controller is good for if you just want a small layout and up to nine DCC equipped engines and it will last you long enough to get a different DCC controller later if you want. I haven't had the Dynamis controller so I can't comment on it. Hope this helps.

I was actually hoping for the Pennsy Mogul to have the Belpaire fire box. Bachmann did a great job of that on the Spectrum K4s but it is probably unrealistic for the cost we are paying for a single RR. I will take it and keep smiling ;D

I myself am looking at the Union Pacific one.

I have read on here that it looks like a Green Bay and Western 2-6-0.

HO / Re: Help Needed

The FT (the red and silver one) with the set is of the Transition era when railroads were switching from steam engines to diesels and the GP-40 (the blue and yellow one) that also comes with the set is of the 1970's/modern era. The box car is of the 40's and 50's, the caboose is more modern and the CSX coal hopper is also a more modern as well. Hope this helps you out.
