Looks like the rails leading to the point in the frog are both touching the frog.Seems they should be insulated from touching each other since one would be positive the other neg.I have had a defect like this before.Push the rails off the point a little to keep them from touching each other .See if they move back a little.

HO / Re: Sound on dc setups

Yes. Most dcc sound locomotives are dual mode meaning they will have sound in DC also, but are limited sounds .Some will ring the bell and blow the horn if programmed to do so if the factory defaults are set up this way .Otherwise you would need to get someone that has dcc to program it for you.

While they don't address the split gear issue directly, Model Railroading, when it was still around, did a couple of articles on upgrading the old split frame 4-8-4's using the original chassis. They were in the 1986 MRM May/June and the July/ August Issues. Someone scanned them and posted them over on the Tyco forum several years ago. The May/June scans can be seen at:

Some folks have even used a CD player motor to repower the things:

Nice work Len.Where theirs a will theirs a way.I have a few of those motors in my parts box also.I need to get a hold of one of those split frame pancake motor locos and try to figure a good fix for them .Seems like there are many that are questioning on what can be done to fix them rather then spend the dollars for a new drive .Getting to be a popular question here. You the Man. Go to the junk yard and find a broken power mirror out of a Dodge Caravan Or a Jeep they have 2 motors in each MIRROR .The Caravan/Voyager has  Mabuchi single shaft motors in them,Then they use the smaller single shaft motor in there Jeeps that looks the same dimension that Bowser uses in the executive line diesels now, but only a single shaft style.I used the larger style late 90's early 2000 ish Caravan mirror motor to repower Rivarossi steam. They are gold colored can motors with high torque at low rpm and smooth and silent. The size up about the same as a Bmann can motor in length but may be a little wider like what is in a Walthers FA and gp 9. ;)

I had one of those Bachmann F9's in SANTA fE .The silver was actually a type of chrome plating on the plastic shell .Same old pancake motor. It turned to a parts doaner when the motor failed. The number boards were made to light up  witch was great.Strange the new f7 does not light up or have numbers.Would be nice to see that come back numbered and lighted .What happened with the downgrade.

Just like to add if your going to go through all that .Go get yourself a sunny white L.E.D and a 800 ohm resistor for the light and wire them in.

Thumbs up for the list.Admire the effort.A friend of mine had a store with a diorama with the 2 locomotives displayed during the golden spike ceremony in Painted brass. They looked like they had to be G scale. It was under a clear acrylic dome style display hood. They were pieces of art with sync sound and yes smoke.Did not know there make ,but when he was closing his doors for good there was a 5K price tag on them .His store was small ,but only sold trains of all scales and had a coffee bar set up where you could read your newspaper and or any old model railroad magazine /catalogs dated back to the 50's and run trains, buy and sell also.Sad day when he closed his doors.

Combination of the 3 is what it says.See CV (2) .Be nice to have that max volt limit to go along with 2.

You can use cv'S 2 ,3 ,4 to speed match .I use them to speed match a Bachmann sd40-2 Standard stock dcc with a Spectrum GE dash 8 with Tsumani and they run perfect together. The slow speed mesh between the 2 will go tie to tie pulling a long consist or keep pace at full speed .You just have to work cv 2 a little with the standard dcc to match the Tsumani and I believe the locos have different ratios. Not 100% on that.Maybe some can verify this. What are you trying to speed match?

I have a GE Dash 8 dcc ready version that is a older release that is DCC ready and want to add sound, but in a attempt the motor growling noise just makes it a poor candidate for sound . I tried a soundtraxx Tsumani decoder in it and a pair of zimo speakers. It growls and moans too loud mid-throttle &up.
Trial and error determined it was the motor noise and a hard plastic motor mount set up.
A member at our club has one of the new Norfolk Southern Heritage diesels and removed the shell to find out that they were basically the same except for the drive-shafts and a blue colored motor compared to the Dash 8 gray motor. The NS diesel is quiet through the entire speed range when running without sound. The DASH 8 has been lubed ,and is free rolling with no worm gears in it to test binding if any in the gear cases and none found.
Are the new Blue colored motors that much different or higher output then the gray motors?
Anybody know?

North Americans sometimes called Canucks .BEST neighbors you could have. They sound just like the folks from the Michigan upper peninsula called Youpers.
