Greetings, All.

Weren't the long tunnels (with little air circulation) the main reason for using electrics in the mountains?  (Cough, cough, gasp, choke.)

I think SP had cab forward steam engines to avoid asphyxiating their freight engineers and firemen in the tunnels.

Possible secondary reason: Cheap hydro-electric power nearby.

Sincerely,

Greetings, all.

I sent an e-mail to someone, and later I thought, "how rude of them not to reply".  Sure enough, a week later, I found the reply in my spam filter.  Arrgh.

"I will check and clean out my spam filter more often." (Duh!)

How can you tell that you are getting old?  Simple.

When you are young, you say "my bike is faster than your bike."

When you are old, you say "my hospital stay was longer than your hospital stay."

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Dear All,

Usually the price of coach and observation passenger cars track each other pretty well.  These current auctions of mine are pretty different though.  Any one need another coach... cheap?

Hope you are enjoying your trains.

Greetings, Fred.

Sounds to me like your electrical pick-ups aren't working.

First, find someone that has an Ohm-meter and knows how to use it.

There should be at least 4 wheel electrical pickup on each side (left and right) of the engine.

With the engine off the track, check for continuity with an Ohm-meter.   The two small pilot wheels (right side) and the front and rear large driver wheels (right side) should all be electrically connected.  Same for the left side.

If you don't have continuity (< 1 ohm?) between all 4 wheels, you will have to turn the engine over, take the bottom cover off and repair it.  Make a nice padded repair-lube cradle that won't bust the small details off the top of your engine.

You might want to check your track to track connectors, too.  It is easy to miss getting both sides of the rail into the connector from the next track section.  You can feel a "bump" or "snag" in the top of the rail over a missed connection.

A gentle squeeze with a pliers will tighten loose track connectors.  Careful not to smash the connector.

Hope this helps.

Ky,
I checked my e-mail and spam filter, and you're right, you are not getting through.

Did you get my reply to your question? Anyone else close by that's on-line that would let you send an e-mail?

If all else fails, just look my number up on anywho.com.  You know my first initial and last name from here and my location from the auction.

Hope things work out.

Sincerely,

Greetings, again.

Wade,

I got your two spreadsheets by e-mail.  Thanks.  I'll see what I can do with them.

Scot,

As far as approximate date, it seems like I had posted it as a reply to someone else's thread (which brought it to the top) about a month before the changeover.  I rarely updated it and posted it by itself, so finding it could be a problem.

When I looked for it, I searched on "spc satnik".   We may not have such a good search engine to work with now, though.  (I'm guessing you are going to try the archive.org "Wayback Machine".)

Again, thanks.

Sincerely,

Dear All,

I would like to recover, re-post and update my old "Big Hauler History" list.

Foolishly, I did not make a backup copy.  Does anyone have an electronic (preferred) or hard copy?  (Loco Bill?)

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Greetings, All.

The new Berkshires look gorgeous.  Congrats to HLR and crew.

If you are a Berk fan, or just want to know how steam engines were designed, manufactured and tested, I highly recommend this book:

"Superpower, The Making of a Steam Locomotive", written and illustrated by David L. Weitzman, 1987, isbn 087923671X

Check your local library, or its inter-library loan system for a copy.

Hope this helps.

"Free the 2" straights!"
