On30 / Re: On30 2-8-2

California #45 is a standard gauge locomotive. I have seen a locomotive weight for it given as 234,000 lbs, which would make it larger them any USA narrow gauge 2-8-2. (D&RGW K 36 is 187,100 lbs, and that is about as big as they came)

Actually the Rev would approve of  Vic. The Rev. Awdrey was a keen a modeller and made his models realistic, and without faces, he complained about some of the illustrations in the books as they were not realistic depictions of the prototypes. He would have objected to the TV/video series as the locos are not good representations of the prototype.

I don't blame Bachmann for following the TV look, that is where the market is, but it would be nice if future models could be easily converted to near prototype appearance.

On30 / Re: Should we anticipate New York?
January 27, 2010, 07:23:47 PM
As I mentioned in my first post, I was not expecting a brand new item of motive power until the NMRA convention - I had been hoping for lesser announcements such as excursion cars or the reintroduction of the Porters (perhaps revised) at New York. Sounds like we might have to wait until NMRA for any such announcements

On30 / Should we anticipate New York?

Dear Bach Man

The New York toy fair is coming up in about 3 weeks time. I know that Bachman's major announcements (such as new locomotives) are, at least for On30,  generally made at the NMRA convention in summer, however will anything, such as new versions of existing items, be announced for On30 at New York?

I know you will give no hint as to what any announcement might be.

Williams by Bachmann / Re: Bachmann @ WGH

Dear Bach Man

Any chance of posting photos of the new Williams layout in the gallery, ideally a "how it was built" folder along the lines of the On30 and Sodor ones in the photo gallery?  I know that many people have been inspried by those, and I am sure that a similar folder on the new latout would also inspire many.

On30 / Re: 25017 village street car set

Yes

The electonics for the reversing mechanism are not in the streetcar itself but in the control barn and the special track. Any powered tram, loco or other powered vehicle that can run on EZ track will reverse if used on a streecar set.

On30 / Re: Dual Purpose Locos

I think this would be a good move, especially for a 2-6-2.  Baldwin catalogue locomotives and/or actual examples could provide a basis. Baldwin built locos on a standardised basis, I am sure that in their catalogues there were tank and tender versions of essentially the same loco. A tender 2-6-2 could be similar to a Maine OF 2-6-2, and various fairly similar tanks (some 0-6-2, some 2-6-2, some with side and some with saddle tanks) operated in Hawaii, Australia (puffing billy 2-6-2t) and other places. Even if all versions modelled were not identical to an actual loco, they would be catalogue locos, and close enough to appeal to a range of modellers.

Bachmann has already used the approach of variations on a basic model, the 0-4-0 and 0-4-2 Porter tanks (sadly not currently available) and the outside and inside frame versions of the 4-4-0 are examples.

On30 / Re: RGS Geese
January 19, 2010, 10:00:41 PM
Note that Goose #1 is the most generic goose in that such conversions of road lorries to rail vehicles were undertaken by narrow gauge roads in many parts of the world. Thus the model can be at home on many layouts that are not RGS based. The other RGS geese are more distinctive and thus might have less appeal to non RGS modellers than #1.

General Discussion / Re: ho n30 locos

For modelling Australian prototypes, in Australia HOn30 is much more common than OO9. There have been brass models and kits in HOn30 of both the NA 2-6-2 and G class garratt (the Backwoods Miniatues locos are of different classes) but I am not sure if any are currently being made. I would try posting on an Australian board, such as the Yahoo Groups Australian Narrow Gauge group.

The prototype locomotive (Ingenio Angelina #9, Dominican Republic) was a compound, with 10 &15 inch x 16 inch cylinders.

As I understand it, it is similar to the 0-6-0t available some years ago, but with DCC.  The previous loco was used for many On30 bashes and quite a few conversion kits have been available using the 0-6-0t as a base. Great for On30 modellers to have it back.
