It seems to me that at one time you made an add on for a car/boat/plane r/c receiver that allowed it to control both speed and direction of a battery powered motor.  Is that what you were refering to?

I still do.
A µp controlled system sold under the EVOLUTION R/C brand.
It uses the same hardware as my RCS stuff with speed and direction controlled by one channel.  The other channel can be used for another loco or sound triggers.

Jim,
perhaps he will be doing for self satisgaction, but at US$39.95 for a 2 channel AM rig complete with 2 x servos, entry level battery R/C cannot get much cheaper.
A 2 channel rig + a suitable ESC can control both speed/direction and have two sound triggers, for not much more than US$120.
Fantastic range & "Glitch Free" to boot.

For those who run battery power and remote control. I have three 3' tunnels in my line. If I switch to battery and remote control will my trains loose signal in the tunnels? I'm new to RC and I'm not sure about RC interference problems and if the RC unit must keep in constant contact with the loco. ??? ;D

The RCS TX handpiece does not need to be in constant touch with the receiver/controller in the loco.
Once the onboard equipment has received a command it remembers that command until told to do something else.
Depending on how deep and how long the tunnel is, and what it is constructed of, like all R/C equipment, it may be difficult to stop and start a loco whilst it is inside the tunnel.  That can usually be achieved by placing the TX handpiece on the track and the signal will be inducted via the rails into the loco.
Rest assured, that unlike digital proportional control, the loco will not go out of control from loss of signal.

Hi Nathan.

I have had an older version of the C20 as a test bed power supply for track powered locos.  It has been very reliable although I only occasionally have a heavy load on it.

I am not familiar with the newer version.

Here is how I installed battery R/C in a Heisler.

There are other ways on how to do it.
Please note where I drilled the lubrication hole TOC describes, in the motor mounting frame.

I would buy at least one of those.

Ditto, with the same type of drive as the 0n2½ version.

To obtain the best appearance the trucks must have that lacy open look, and not the blocked in blobs the other LS Shays have.

Chuck,
Even if you could obtain the sound card with "Tsunami technolgy" and fitted to some 3 truck Shays, do not expect it to have any degree of controllability when it comes to whistle or bell sounds.
You cannot trigger the whsitle and bell with track magnets and reed switches.
I believe also, unlike some sound systems, this particular sound system cannot control those functions by varying the voltage.
They can only be accessed if you also buy and fit to your RR at extra expense, a suitable DCC system.

Also, in regular DC mode, you will be limited to controlling the loco with a non PWM controller.  In DC mode DCC decoders do not like PWM.  Erratic operation may occur.

Matt,
unless Bachmann have 'learned their lesson' on the 3-truck Shay,  then the sound will be more like a Bachmannierra sound.   I fail to see,  apart from sound system manufacturer reluctance,  why a manufacturer cannot install a quality aftermarket sound as an option.  Why do we have to get a system which is simply not up to the task (and apparently badly installed in the first instance)?

Tim,
That is a rhetorical question, right? :'(

Large / Re: Combining DCC with Direct Radio Control
March 23, 2007, 07:39:46 AM
Some months ago I was requested to contact Debbie Ames, the Lenz importer into the USA, to discuss the possibility of an RCS R/C interface for battery R/C'ing Lenz DCC.

I duly did contact Debbie and during our cordial discussion I offered to supply the RCS encoding sequences if Lenz would care to use them for just such an interface.

I guess the wheels of a big DCC company take some time to grind into motion, but, I am still waiting to hear back from someone.

The offer still stands.

Joe, here are the instructions on preparing the Connie.

They are part of the instructions I supply on converting the Connie to battery R/C.

Hi Dennis.

Do you have a follow up as to what the problem was?
#194
My mistake.

Tim is correct.
That means the MAG-15 should not exceed 21 - 22 volts going to the TE.
#195
Try setting the TE to linear only.

Make sure the actual voltage going from the Mag 15 to the TE does not exceed 24 volts.
