General Discussion / Re: Civil War trains
February 13, 2011, 10:07:54 PM
I have now seen a reference that states that the "Pegasus" was retired in 1863, so perhaps it could be used for an early civil war train. Bachmann's other historic train type, the De Witt Clinton, apparently only lasted a short time so would not be suitable. While locomotives built during the civil war would be more modern than the "Pegasus" and the "John Bull" it seems that some of these early type s of locomotives did last into the civil war.

Bachmann used to produce a model of the "John Bull" locomotive (sold in a train set). While this is an earlier locomotive from the 1830s it lasted in regular service until 1866. Also Bachmann produce a Norris 4-2-0 (Pegasus), also from the 1830s. I don't whether any of these lasted until the civil war, but they did last into the late 1850s.

Any dc item of motive power should work. The set appears to be dc, including what looks like the Bachmann dc speed controller.  I assume that the set has the electronics of the trolley sets built into the speed controller casing instead of a car barn, but is otherwise the same. The trolley sets are dc, not dcc, and operate with any dc motive power, not just the supplied trolley.

The Bach Man can correct me if I am wrong!

Thomas & Friends / Re: Hornby on Bachmann track?
January 17, 2011, 06:44:21 AM
Hornby and Bachmann Thomas products will operate together and run on the same track. Yes British OO is a different scale but on the same track as HO. However Bachmann Thomas items are not really to scale, the locomotives are mainly models of the TV/video series depictions, and the TV/video locomotives are not accurate representations of the real prototypes. Hornby's tend (not always) to be closer to the real life prototypes, thus less like the TV/video depictions. Bachmann Thomas Rolling stock is often British OO stock adapted from Bachmann's British range. Both Bachmann and Hornby use standard British style couplings for their Thomas products.

With non Thomas items it is different. Then the size difference is often very noticeable, and HO does not use British style couplings so to operate together couplings need changing.

I hope this clarifies things.

On30 / Re: Looking for information on the new Porters

They were announced at the 2010 NMRA Convention. Go to the General Discussion Board on this site and click on the link under the topic 2010 NMRA Announcements (the firs topic on that board) and you will find them.

On30 / Re: Great little narrow gauge 2-6-2T

Thanks Kevin for posting this loco and Mark for the link with information on it Lovely little loco. Baldwin made quite a few outside frame 2-6-2t side tanks including the Puffing Billy NA class (Australia), a loco that ran in Hawaii, this one and probably several others..They vary a bit in size and details but all share the same general appearance. The Large Scale Lynn loco (prototype ran on Britain), although a 2-4-2t also is of similar appearance. So I agree it would make a good model with fairly wide applicability. Personally I would mot mind which particular prototypel was chosen, but then my line is freelance, although based on Australian practice. I suspect, if made, Bachmann would market it as a catalogue loco, not a specific prototype.

Has any one any details about this loco?

No offense, but the aussys, have the ungliest trains on earth.

That is my opinoin.

Rock On!
Dusten

I don't know which Australian trains you are thinking of, but Aussie trains were quite varied in steam days, and to a lesser extent are today. Some followed British practices while others were quite American. In ON30 the most obvious choice would be the Puffing Billy 2-6-2t, these were a stock Baldwin design and of typical American appearance. A very similar 30 inch gauge locomotive ran in Hawaii. Another often requested Aussie locomotive is the Victorian Railways narrow gauge Garratt, these are of course very British. There are many others. Given the variety of Aussie trains, do you find them all ugly?

To return to your original post, I suspect that Bachmann had planned both versions of the 4-4-0 before the inside frame was released, and that they share quite a few  parts. This does not appear to have been done for the 2-80, so for Bachmann to introduce a second 2-8-0 would cost more than it did for them to introduce the second 4-4-0. This doesn't mean that they couldn't do it, but sales would need to be greater if development and productions costs were higher.  Having said that, if a second 2-8-0 was to be produced, I would support the Lawndale loco.

In 2010 Bachmann announced the reissue of the Porters, both the 0-4-0t and the 0-4-2t. These will have DCC, and will be available both with and without sound. The only other new items announced were separate sale observation cars in olive green and burgundy and black liveries (both unlettered). Unlettered  burgundy and black versions of the other passenger cars were also announced. So no brand new locomotives or rolling stock at all. Not even a new train set.

I hope that this is not a sign that Bachmann is  losing interest in ON30. There was mention of production difficulties and I know that economic times are tough in most places, but all other scales received more from Bachmann than ON30. Lets hope for more in 2011.

On30 / Re: Need Help On30

You can NOT use an AC 3 rail O scale controller such as the Lionel CW 80 with On30 or any other DC equipment. You will need a separate controller. If you bought a reversing streetcar set you would get one with the set, otherwise a simple controller such as the basic Bachmann DC controller  should be sufficient

Some, if not all, of the Bachmann DCC controllers come with a separate wall power supply, this might also apply to other brands. If the controller you get has a separate wall pack all you need to do is get a 240v wall pack. The rest will be the same. Here in Australia Bachmann sells its controllers with 240v wall packs, that might apply in South Africa. if not, or you are buying from the USA, a separate 240v wall pack should be easy to find. Just check that the wall packs output is the same as the original  1110v pack.

On30 / Re: Shay Versions

The only Bachmann On30 Shay made has been the 14 ton model, which does not match your descriptions. Are you referring to the Bachmann Large Scale Shays? If so a post on that board might get a response.

Dear Bird,
We'll have samples of many of the newly announced products at the show.
Have fun!

For On30 I thought the only newly announced products were the re-issues of the Porters. When is something really new for On30 going to be announced?

On30 / Re: Dream rolling stock for Bachmann to produce
October 13, 2010, 08:33:29 PM
In addition to my suggestions above - shorter passenger cars, perhaps a version of the long caboose without the cupola (could be kit bashed I know) and a matching coach. While i know of no exact prototype these would be fairly typical of narrow gauge stock, including 30 inch gauge, in many parts of the world.

I don't really expect Bachmann to make these. but this is a dream thread after all.

First and of high priority -  excursion cars, similar to the Bachmann  HO scale open sided (not Jackson Sharp) excursion cars.

Also a log skidder, similar to those available from Bachmann in HO and Large scales.

Both of these seem well overdue for On30.
