General Discussion / Bachmann DCC/DC decoder swap
January 03, 2011, 08:20:07 AM

I have several Bachmann DCC/DC steamers  that I am converting to Soundtrax Tsunami decoders

As such I have the decoders that came with the Bachmann left over

I have a BLI sound equipped but non DCC steamer

BLI instructions say it can be converted to DCC by adding any NMRA compliant DCC decoder

I swapped in the Bachmann but it does not work in DC yet when in the Bachmann it ran in DC

Any ideas of why

You can run your power supply to  the three tracks---- connected in parallel

However the trains will all be controlled in common i.e. no independent speed control

They will all start and stop at the same time and speed up and slow down the same way

The 2-8-4 is DCC on board but not sound

Looking at digitrax sound decoders for the 2-8-4 it is not just a simple swap out to add sound to a DCC on board tender

I have sources for the decorders but they have to be programmed

Since Bachmann uses the decoders they are already programmed

I would have thought you could buy them as a replacement part similar to other parts of the engines if they had malfunctioned

I may do that eventually but right now I am satisfied with running sound equipped in  DC

I'll probably only switch my DCC equipped 2-8-4 over as I already have a 2-8-0----4-8-2----2-8-2 and 2-6-6-2 running DCC/DC sound

I have Bachmann DCC equipped and want to upgrade to Sound
I run DC so I can't program the decoders

Can I purchase a replacement part Bachmann decoder for a sound powered version

Why can't I just set them up like my other sound powered Bachmanns that run in DC with Bachmann decorders or
does Bachmann use Tsunamis that are preset for DC/DCC ( CV 29 to 6 )

Thanks for the link

Converting DCC to sound
I have 3 Bachman steamers with DCC and Sound ( 2-8-0  4-8-2  2-6-6-2 )and am satisfied with how they perform IN DC mode

I have 2 DCC only ( 2-8-4 and 4-8-4 )

Are there any instructions  on converting to sound --what decorders  are needed and what speakers --installation instructions etc

I want to  operate only in DC mode like my others

It doesn't look stupid on the real ones

Put cylinders on the HO Thomas so they match the real ones like at the Strasburg RR

I bought the unlettered and lettered it for my freelance RR

Sounds like it does but without taking the engine shell off I don't know
