On30 / Re: Bachmann On30 Future

In the UK the Leek and Manifold Rly (30" gauge) used transporter wagons to move sg cars on its line. It's also quite common practise in Continental Europe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transporter_wagon

One of the Baldwin 4-6-0s is still alive and well. 778 was re-imported from India some years ago and has had a major restoration.

It would have been odd if none had operated in the US, since I assume they would have still been building them up 'til the Armistice so a number would never have even shipped to Europe. In the UK the Baldwin 4-6-0 saw the most post-war use with about a dozen (he said hazily) working on about 4 railways, including some that were regauged. Outside of them there were a trio of Baldwin 2-6-2s (though they saw very little service) and at least one Baldwin diesel loco. Given the number of locos available post WW1 it's a negligible number.
It is a surprise that no WW1 loco ended up in Maine, is it not?
The reputation of the Baldwin 4-6-0 in the UK was pretty poor. A combination of crews being unfamiliar with US practise and rough riding in reverse.

If Bachmann were to produce a 1:43 scale (ie, British O scale) Baldwin 4-6-0 as produced for WW1, they'd just about sell one to every On30 modeller in the UK. Whether that would be enough sales for them is another matter.

Scale is one problem. In the US O scale is 1:48, in the UK it's 1:43, and in Continental Europe I believe it's 1:45.

Also, so far as I am aware the American 2'gauge locos produced for service in WW1 didn't operate in the US.

And as far as military modellers go, they are, I believe, mostly into static displays so the cost of a working model would be a bit excessive for their needs.

The 8-18c/d 4-4-0/2-6-0 still sounds like a nice idea.

Rock On!

agreed.
logging and mainline rrs ran them and they ran from the 1870s to the 1940s, with modifications. Everyone should be able to justify one of them on their layout.

General Discussion / Re: Which train for Dickens village
December 20, 2012, 01:21:35 PM
There isn't much available in British model railways suitable for Dickens' time period (1812-1870) and certainly nothing ready-to-run in either OO scale or O scale. Bearing in mind that Dickens died only one year after the completion of your transcontinental RR perhaps you want one of MTH's O gauge early 4-4-0s but I don't know what radius they'll cope with.

Anyway, Dickens is one of ours! You've got Mark Twain and Melville :o

On30 / Re: New modeling challenges

If you really want a challenge in On30, I suggest a model of a 750mm gauge Klose System loco. http://www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/klose/klosetothe.htm

Serbia had some nice 750mm gauge 2-6-6-2 mallets that are prettier, imho, than bachmann's offering. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2-6-6-2.jpg

How would you explain the popularity of the 4-4-0s and 2-6-0s since they are from the 1870s, so I'm sure a 2-6-6T Mason Bogie would be just fine.   2 for the Denver South Park & Pacific in different Colors, painted unlettered Lake Russian Iron, Painted Unlettered Olive Green Russian Iron, and painted unlettered Red Russian Iron.

Bachmann Spectrum Must Consider the Mason Bogie because I really want one on my model railroad collection, and I don't want it to cost an arm and a leg like the Accucraft ones do.

The Mason Bogies were rare beasts and in the case of the DSP&P versions, specific to one railroad and only ran for a couple of decades. By comparison, the 4-4-0 & 2-6-0 worked on railroads all over the US and in modernised form survived into the 1930s and 40s.

If you're a collector who'se happy just to run his trains more or less 'out of the box' then I can see why a Mason is attractive, but if you want a model RR that follows prototype practice (like Kevin's Tuscarora RR) then it's just too much of an odd-ball.

That line had an interesting roster. A sister of that loco survived (in std gauge form) right up to 1960 before she was scrapped. Shame, so nearly made it into preservation.

Large / What is it with model railroads and Christmas?
November 23, 2012, 02:10:59 PM
Genuine question. How did the market for special Christmas sets come about? It's just not something we do east of the pond. Sure, model railroad/railway items are given as presents to children or adult modellers but special Christmas sets to run around the tree just don't exist. Seems awfully expensive for what is basically a fancy bauble.

General Discussion / Re: motive power
November 22, 2012, 12:36:19 PM
Isn't it perfectly good English to say that
"the motive power on this consist is three GP40s" or "three GP40s  provide the motive power on this consist"

I think that motive power includes anything capable of moving under its own power.

One of the Boston Revere and Beach Lyn 0-4-4s, 2-4-4s or the 2-4-6 might fit in nicely alongside the existing Forneys and as they ran till 1929 they may appeal to rather more modellers.

By comparison, all the DSP&P Mason bogies were gone by 1899 and not many modellers model pre 1900.
