18 feet would be comically short for a cattle car...  :-\

Just got the proof for my article last night. There were some corrections, but nothing big. I was advised the copy was going to the printer in about a week.

I just got a call from Trainworld that the excursion cars are in and ready to be shipped; my car is on the way.
Great! Let us know how it looks when you get it.

On30 / Re: 4-6-0 gear problem?
March 22, 2017, 02:55:00 PM
Just curious, how long have you been running it?
I have 4 on my own layout and know others who've run theirs a lot of large layouts and this is the first I've heard of gear issues...

Quote from: ksivils on March 20, 2017, 08:54:35 PMI send in my files (cover and interior) and I get a proof copy in about three days.
Well, I sent in my photos and article in January, and I still haven't seen the proof yet.

I was at Winterail 2017 this past weekend and there was a White River rep there. She swore the annual would go out in April.
I'm not saying she's wrong, but the editor is still working on stuff and I have yet to see a proof. I'm not sure how they'll get it finished, printed and shipped in such a short timeframe, but once it's ready, it wouldn't take long to print it, I guess...

I just called the Gazette to inquire about my late Jan/Feb issue and found out the 2017 On30 mag will mail in April.
Seeing that the editor hasn't cleared many of the articles with the authors yet, I wouldn't bet my life on that timeframe.
I hope they're right, as I want to see the finished version as much as the rest of you. More so, probably.

Heard from Chris today. He's still editing, I should get the proof of my article soon.
He said that there were three ET&WNC-themed articles in this annual, which I'm very happy to hear mine is one! The others are a guide on modeling ET&WNC coaches (no idea who write that) and another on passenger service by ET&WNC guru Johnny Graybeal.

I see that Trainworld has them on pre-order, but no timeframe for them yet for retail purchase.
I'll for sure buy at least one, paint it grey and put pre-WW2 Army markings on it.

I just emailed Chris last night. He said the proof of my article should be emailed to me next week. So, that clearly means he's still putting the thing together. But in this digital age, once he's done, he only has to transmit the annual to the printer, however he does that.
But seeing that we're talking about the first week in March now, I wouldn't bet on people getting them until the very end of the coming month, at the absolute earliest.
I assume when I get my author copy, it should go out with the first batch. If people aren't already posting by then that they've gotten theirs, I'll post that I got mine, so the rest can assume they'll be getting them soon after.

I wouldn't hold my breath. I haven't even heard any info on proofs or how far along in editing they are right now...
You'll see them soon, but I wouldn't think very soon.

Quote from: Terry Toenges on February 15, 2017, 01:00:53 PMI've never done a craftsman kit like that. I don't know that I would attempt something like that. They look kind of fragile, too.
I started a Bachmann passenger car from the top of my layout and let it roll down hill just to see what would happen if a car came uncoupled on the way up. By the time it got to the last loop, it went flying off the track. It didn't sustain any damage but I imagine the wooden one would be in pieces.
Nah, they're not nearly THAT fragile. Sure, you wouldn't want to step on a wood kit or throw it across the room, but a box shape is a box shape and handled correctly, they're just fine. Someone sideswiped my Deerfield River Laser caboose kit with a ten-wheeler and there wasn't so much as a mark on it (other than the weathering I built it with, that it).

That's the first such kit I ever built as I HAD to have that caboose to go with my Bachmann ET&WNC ten-wheelers. It was a learning experience and if I had another one to build, it'd look way better now that I've built one, but it looks, tracks and endures just like it should on my layout.

HOW are they uncoupling? Are the knuckles being pried apart by the stresses of going through the curves? Is one coupler popping up over the other?
Is it just the couplers are one end, or both?
The tender of a 2-6-0 is pretty short and the coach is much longer, it might be a case where the centerlines of the rolling stock in question just don't line up on such a tight curve, though I sort of doubt it.

On30 / Re: US Civil war. On30 Bachmann 4-4-0s?

Nice layout!  :)
Balloon stacks would be more correct for the timeframe, though.
The real W&A was a 5-foot gauge railroad until the 1880s, but it does look good as a 30" line, doesn't it?
The only thing I have on my layout to recall the "War of Northern Aggression" is a memorial, as my layout takes place in 1943:

My Father made the barrel on a lathe for this, and is an accurate rendition of a M1857 12-pounder "Napoleon" barrel. In the 1940s, this is the only type of Civil War memorial you'd likely find, other than a statue of a soldier. Battlefields didn't have replica cannon carriages on them until the late 1950s and an original carriage would have rotted away after 70 years. So a pedestal is historically accurate.
I'm looking into ways to chemically speed up the oxidation as it looks way too polished for what it is...

Are all Bachmann On30 locos equipped with LEDs?
