Ashes are carbon.  Do a search of carbon and electricity.

One of the problems with the Tsunami steam is that a lot of the sound comes from Colorado narrow gauge.  While this is nice, it sure doesn't help people who model mainline steam.

The streamlined C&) is an L-2 Hudson,an inhouse rebuild of some heavy F series Pacifics.  They were finished in yellow/gold and silver/gray.  Only steam locomotive I've seen I didn't photograph.  There is one in the B&O Museum in Baltimore.  Why that an not a C&O Pacific with flying pumps, I have no idea.  Or a K-3 Mikado.

I have to agree that the N&W J Class is as nice as a streamlined steam loco can be.  But sheer beauty rests in some of the late C&O Pacifics with Elesco feedwater heaters, flying pumps, and low mounted headlights.

The first section of track has been ballasted.  It's the C&O mainline at Nick Junction just to the west of Gordonsville, Va.  (this is non-powered track)

Michael Farm house and barn are by "Mountaineer Precision Products," laser cut wood.  The barn is closer to the barn on my wife's girlhood home, but the house is sort of close.  It needs a glider on the front porch.

Robert, The Michael Farm house and barn are both wood kits.  I've been busy all day, but by tomorrow I can let you know the name of the companies   I'm not sure what you mean by "coal station."  Do you mean "coaling tower"?  There are three on the layout, though one is not in place.  The concrete one in South River Yard is a Walther's kit.  The one in place is a Bachmann Spectrum kit, no longer available.  The one not in place is also a Bachmann kit - maybe a modified Platisticville that I detailed and made to look fairly good.

I think that I need to add that Sheldon Stroh designed both the building and the layout.  I have not varied from his layout design by much.

Sid,
The mainline and yards are code 100.  Sidings are 83.  I went with 100 because when I started the price difference was substantial.  It's much less now.  The room is 26x18 approximately.  It's a rectangle with one corner cut out:    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
                                 X                                          X
                                 X                                          X
                                 X                                          X
                                 X                                          X
                                 X                                          X
                                 X                                          X
                                 X                                          X
                                 X                                          X
                                 XXXXXXXXXX                        X
                                 O                  X                      X
                                 O                  X                      X
                                 O                  XXXXXXXXXXXXX
                                 O                  X                      X
                                 00000000000XXXXXXXXXXXX

The train room is the large area in X.  The patio is the area with X and O and the small X area is the storage room.

Yes, Bachmann offered a weathere 2-6-6-2 which had a different cab number than the unweathered and cost something like $50 more, MSRP.  I'm not sure they sold very well because of the extensive mark up.

Actually the real purpose of the small bag of black stuff is to let you check for dandruff.   When you scratch your head trying to figure out what it's for, you will discover if you have dandruff or not. ;D
