General Discussion / Re: switching my layout to DCC
January 25, 2013, 04:10:29 PM
Very straight forward, easy to do. Just remember to NOT leave your DC locomotives on the track after you switch. If you are using EZ track just unplug the DC connection and plug in the DCC controller connection. NO need to worry, if you only have DCC loco's on the track. ENJOY the ability to run more than one train at a time.

It is rare when I cannot find a song on You Tube.

I have 5 GP30's, 2 GP38's, a GP7 and a GP, All by Bachmann. I have found that they are good, can't beat the price and the durability.

I believe you should see about 15VAC across the tracks for DCC.

Given that the loco was used and from e bay, I decided to send it back . Last night I ordered a NEW 4-8-4! I am one of those old guys, whom if I have seen it work, can usually make it work again. Have gotten the darned train bug pretty bad. addictive hobby this.

Thanks

Thank you for the advice, that was one of the things I tried, I decided to return it to the seller. It was my first experience with steam. I can get around the inside of diesels with out problems.
Thanks again.

HO / N&W 4-8-4 Class J help
December 17, 2012, 08:55:23 AM
I recently purchased a used 4-8-4 Bachmann #82103, it is a absolutely beautiful loco, however I am having a issue with the tender, the rear truck will not stay on the track. from what I can tell the link between the loco and tender is putting downward pressure on the front of the tender causing the rear to be lifted up. I could use any and all advice/assistance. I would like to keep it and not return it for a refund, as i run trains and not display trains.
Thank you in advance.

I had an EZ Command Digital Command Control System. I was able to run two (2) DCC locomotives at a time, if both were new locos, if either was one of my Athearn's, that I had upgraded to DCC things came to a halt. I moved up to a Power Cab, I can now run four (4) locomotives at once. No matter the locomotive. The power cab tells me that i am drawing about 1.4 amps with four (4) two of the new Bachmans and two of my upgraded Spectrum's. I don't run the Athearn's any longer, too noisy! I had no way to measure amps before I got it.

I second JWard's comment, I started with a Bachmann command control set, quickly purchased a walk around companion, outgrew those and am now using a NCE ProCab. In retrospect, I should have just went with the NCE to begin with. I was however able to get most of my money out of the Bachmann stuff on e-bay. If you are  hooked on this hobby, just figure to spend the money up front. Unless like me, you don't have the patience to wait, and buy just what you can afford at the time ::)!

Yes, the functions were the same. I did not (at that time) have any sound locos. I moved to a NCE power cab, so I could program and read  the CV's. Cable was ready made, seems like it was 9.00 or 10.00 for a 15 footer. if you don't have anything close by, I can let you have one. Drop me a line off forum, cwmeeks@cwmeeks.com
