hat-

It depends on the loco. Some will mysteriously derail and others will equally mysteriously stay on the track. You just have to try it to see which you have.

That can be due to the cables going to the tender
How they line up is very critical

I would ditch the smoke

You can get 2-8 0s with DCC/Sound for decent prices as well as 4-4-0 and 4-6-0

That is what I did on my 18/22 ovals --ran as a fanfare type consist
Now I have 22/24 ovals but still do the same with a 4-4-0 modern ----4-6-0----4-4-0 old timer

You are right about undecorated not that easy to find
I had to repaint  an Erie to get a FA for the ME&O

My favorite is the 4-8-2 USRA Heavy on my 24 " curves but for 18 " curves I would go 2-8-0

HO / Retrofitting 4-4-0 DCC on board to sound
January 10, 2011, 12:21:02 PM
Anyone try retrofitting the 4-4-0 DCC on board to sound
Doesn't seem like there would be enough room in the tender
for the Tsunami decoders I have seen

Great engines
My favorite
I like the lines of USRA 2-8-2 and 4-8-2
2-8-0 is a great runner but it is boxy looking

HO / Re: Spectrum HHP-8 Will Only Run In One Direction
January 06, 2011, 08:37:14 AM
I had several bachmann DCC ob boards do this while operating DC
Evidently the decoders are very sensitive to the power supply voltage in DC mode

I have two ovals and 2 separate power supplies of the same exact type ( MRC sound power )

The engine runs fine on one track but only in one direction on the other
Switching power supplies causes the same results --the engine will only run in one direction

So it is definitely the power supply

Bachmann non sound DCC/DC decoders are evidently not the best on the market

I have no problems with Bachmann DCC/DC sound decoders ( probably  SoundtraxTsunami)

Bur their DCC/DCC non sound cause problems in the DC mode

Installing the small jumpers on the decoder module making them straight DC cures the symptoms

HO / Re: Pulling power of Spectrum 4-6-0's

Go with 22 on the 4x8

Use plexiglass around the edges that are not against a wall

It will handle 4-8-2s and 2-8-2 and they have great pulling power

The 2-8-0 is also a great runner but I love the look of the USRAs

Never did get used to the looks of the 2-8-0 though I do run one

Here is a pic of my old 4x8 with 18 and 22 and plexiglass

Will it work in DCC?
My DCC unit hasn't come yet so I don't know but it is a DCC/DC decoder
