I'll be there Saturday and will post any pics hopefully that evening.

That's the great thing about this hobby - everyone gets to do as they please.  I operate at a few local layouts - some guys have track everywhere and zero scenery, some have tons of scenery and only a handful of cars.

For me, I don't understand the first thing about railroad operations.  My grandfather had Lionel trains in his basement and I just always wanted a layout.  Finescale is not for me, but for others, it's the only way.

There is nothing wrong with either.  What a great hobby!

The speaker installs underneath that circuit board.  It's been a while since I did the install on my Climax.  I'm pretty sure I removed the four screws that held in that board and put the speaker underneath.  Then reinstalled the original circuit board.

I think I had to add a piece of electrical tape to the top of the speaker since it is in close proximity to the circuit board and might short it out.

When you remove that board, you will see the pre-drilled holes for the speaker.  Measure it first, but I'm pretty sure it was a 1.1" speaker that fits there, just not 100% sure.

And now I just received a second shipment of replacement gears!   :D

Actually, it's brilliant marketing by Bachmann - I might as well buy another shay now!

As a side note, this shipment had all four clips in it.  The first shipment had just two replacement clips.

I've never liked the noise coming from the stock Bachmann decoders, so I always replace them.

It has something to do with the frequency that is being sent to the decoder.  Sometimes if you remove all references to DC control from the decoder, that can solve it too.  With the stock decoders, I believe changing CV 29 to a value of 2, and CV 50 to a value of 4 solves this.

Good luck!

The Micro Tsunami will fit in it just fine.  I think it's the 1.1" speaker that you need.

Not quite plug and play - the Tsunami does not have an 8-pin plug, but if you solder one onto it, it becomes plug and play!

How to wire:

Two more wires to the speaker and you are set.

Thanks Tom - you are correct.  I thought that was the culprit, but didn't want to test it without knowing - I've blown enough LEDs already!  It tested just fine.

Now to solder it without shorting out the red wire!

Thanks for your help!

On30 / 2-8-0 Wiring Quiz
May 14, 2010, 09:04:12 PM
I have the regular DCC 2-8-0 (i.e. non-Tsunami.)  The rear lamp stopped working and upon inspection, the black wire from the LED has come disconnected from somewhere.  The red lead is still soldered to the circuit board.  But where does the black lead get soldered to?

I can't find a wiring diagram either with my documentation or on this site.  Any help is appreciated!

Okay, a 10 minute fix.  Those clips are painted or glued, so they are difficult to get off.  I broke two and had two intact.  The Bachmann shipment came with only two - I would ask for four next time just in case.

Other than the clips, it is easily replaced.  A little lube and she runs fine again.

After closer inspection, three of my four gears had cracked.  Both front ones and the aft back one.

The replacement gears are significantly more robust.  Went together real easily after I got those clips off!

Well, kudos to Bachmann, I have to report.  Very fast shipping - package was in my mailbox the day after they sent it, at no cost to me.  The gears are not the same as the original - much "thicker".  The shipment they sent me included the entire drive line, including the small part that I broke.  I have not installed it yet, but having disassembled the front truck in the past, I estimate it will be a less than 5 minute conversion for both trucks.

I'll post pictures of the shipment when I get a chance.

Thanks Bachmann.

On a similar topic, how about multiple road numbers as well?  :)

Thanks Jack, I have my request in for some.  Are these the newer gears referenced in another thread?  Or the same original ones?

Fortunately, getting at those gears is easier than it looks.  With a small issue - I don't know the name of the part I broke, but is the the small box shaped part that holds the gear shaft in place - there is one on each axle.  I broke off one of the little tabs.  Anyone know what kind of glue to use to hold it in place?  Hate to use ACC in case I need to get at the gears again.

Are you back to On30 again?

MR is in it's own little world and has very little to do with NG, so when I discovered On30 (not On2 1/2) I canceled my MR subscription  and now pick up the NGSL that is much more in tune with what I want to do.  MR is dedicated to the mainline RR with an ocasionial blurb about NG. NGSL is 100% NG, so that is where I chose to spend my $$. I understand that folks who do mainline stuff would have very little interest in NGSL and that's fine.

Ditto here.  MR seems to be repeat the same "how-to"s every few months or so.  It is frustrating to page through.  It was discouraging to see all the "mega layouts" and try to figure out where to start and how much this was going to cost.  Thank goodness I found On30.  The Gazette is about the best magazine out there.  There is even the occasional standard gauge layout (thus the short line part of the title.)

RMC also has some great modeling tips, but I let my subscription expire.  After paging through some back issues though, I am seriously considering resubscribing.

I've been wondering why my shay has been running so rough lately.  After very, very close inspection, both gears on the front truck are cracked.

Unfortunately, that makes 3 of my 4 Bachmann On30 lokes that have had gear issues (Porter and Climax had issues - my 2-8-0 is wonderful.)  I was just about to start on my "real" On30 layout but now I am seriously reconsidering.  I would just hate to go back to HO...

Hopefully, soon, Bachmann or NWSL will have a fix for this.

Frustrating since the On30 shay has been sold for a very long time.
