The DRGW leased the DM&IR Yellowstones during the winter months of WWII to help with the overwhelming war traffic.  The DM&IR Yellowstones ave been screaming to get done in diecast/plastic. While I love big steam and all, I don't like the EM-1 and was thinking the DM&IR Yellowstones would have proved to be more marketable on B-mann's end, I don't understand how when people are constantly asking for the DM&IR engines when you put out an engine that I never really hear HO scale steam fanatics really talk about the EM-1 as much as they do the DM&IR M-3 and M-4 but that just might be me.

HO / Re: Age of train folk

I'm 25, a brass collector and a steam only collector, the only thing I've seen so far is the decline of the older folks in the hobby, which to me means less steam will be made in the years to come  BUT on the flip side the brass market is borderline about to plummet because there's more brass than there are people buying it. For me that's a good thing because I casually sit here and watch prices slowly drop to affordability. Models that were once $2,000 are going for $750-800 and they aren't selling at that price either, models that were $500 aren't selling at $75-100 so for me eventually it'll mean I can buy a whole railroad roster for pennies on the dollar. The only thing that will retain value are the extremely limited recent runs of brass and that's it and eventually even they will fall prey to the times.

People just like diesels more and more now because that's what they've been accustomed to.

Now I run trains at my local park around christmas time for kids to watch and see things beyond a world on a TV or Computer screen and hope that inspires them to go out and explore the hobby. My local model railroad club I belong to has a few decent youngsters who are active in the hobby. So I think the demographic may be shrinking but the hobby will remain strong for years to come. Especially with the newer stuff coming out being affordable from companies such as Bachmann

Or perhaps a 30 50 #6, which isn't as huge but keeps the radius to a 30 minimum

yes, I was referring to a double curve turnout. It saves a lot of space especially when you're trying to squeeze in as much possible in a 12 by 7.5 with a minimum radius of 30 inches

Hey bachmann,

How about some curved nickel silver turnouts? Like with 33 and 35 inch radius

I think he may be referring to Narrow gauge running on HO sized track, which is On30

I'll just let pictures do the talking:

Hope that fuels anyone's drive toward kitbashing   ;D

Very nice indeed! But I wonder what could be used as a donor mechanism for the Erie L-1? So ugly I just have to have one :)

On30 / Re: Bachmann's 2013 New Products Announcement

"I'd also see merit in focusing more on surviving NG engines and stock simply because an engine still operating or preserved intact must be familiar to a far greater number of people than something long gone for scrap."

Such as the K-28 and K-36 examples being used on the Durango & Silverton. Add in some of their passenger cars to that [shameless] wish list. I would buy several of each of those in On30 if Bachmann made them available.  :)

I would love for a K-36 or two, even a K-27 would have gotten me into On30 but I'm still not enthusiastic enough to dive into On30 with the lack of such engines. The fact that Bachmann hasn't at least produced a C-18 or K-27 in On30 yet is mind-boggling.  There were a lot of people talking in great numbers about how Bachmann should produce a K-27 at least and it's like your design team has all the specifications from when you made the engine in 1:20.3 so it shouldn't be all that hard.

I'm hoping it's just you ran into design errors and you're trying to fix them so we have a better product ;D

Well yeah,. considering his work I would constantly study when I had chance. Definitely an inspiring modeler to me!

HO / Re: 2-6-6-2 Problem, is it common?

This part is rather delicately affixed on, and falls out of place really easily. If you don't know how to put it back on properly, it can get really frustrating, I had to do it with mine and modded it by gluing the nuisance in place while at the same time not binding the whole chassis. It requires some patience and surgery.

General Discussion / Re: What do people model?
August 14, 2013, 04:22:01 PM
Mainly HO freelance version of Standard gauged Denver and Rio Grande Western steam from early as 1920's to 1950's, but Primarily I like to stick to the 40's mainly for wartime traffic.

I do model N scale but my idea for that is for travel and a background forced perspective layout from my HO layout.

I'm BIG into STEAM, like articulateds and heavy duty mountain road engines.

I collect private freelance railroad cars as well as if to add to the dimension of my freelance world.

I spend more time on steam locomotives than anything else, which means the layout gets highly neglected, both time spent on it and financially. Brass engines are expensive despite my efforts bargain hunting, my dedication to my steam locomotives is definitely a labor of love. I would spend up to 4-5 hours daily just researching different engines and styles and the history surround certain railroads in the time period I model.

I still have steam locomotive projects lined up that need to be finished before I start new endeavors so I'm going to start focusing on them for now like my recently finished 2-10-4.

I have plans to do HOn3 Narrow gauge now that Blackstone has announced the K-36 so that will be a prominent  part of my layout as well.

My inspirations in the Hobby include the likes of John Allen, Malcolm Furlow, John Olsen, Jim Findley among other 'artists' and kitbashers in the hobby.

Right now my funding is cut short due to pending hospital bills and the need for a car, and regular bills.....darned responsibilities :-\

HO / Re: battle train

In the second world war, the US did have some coastal railguns for protection on the home front, but they weren't given much attention since nothing really came with the exception of a U-Boat in the NY Harbor. Rail travel for the Military was like a beehive of activity, all the roads were regulated under the military board for the war effort and restrictions were put in place as well. I'm building up a Military Train and so for a have three Pullman Troop cars mixed in with heavyweights, and I'm wondering a good way to get like 6 or 7 flatcars together with Jeeps Shermans and Halftracks tied down to them. I model 1920's to the 50' but primarily I model the wartime era.
