General Discussion / Re: sitch problems

Check to make sure it isn't picking the points, check that the wheels and track are in guage, check that power is being fed to the frogs, check to make sure it is clear of obstructions and the track and loco wheels are clean. Unfortunately with the information you provided I can only provide those generic suggestions.

So the 8 wheels aren't the same diameter as previous model I find it hard to that out of the whole Bachman range there isn't 8 wheels left anywhere!!
Like I said before you can likely get the parts you are looking for off of another locomotive from ebay or elsewhere but it would only be a short term temporary fix. That is just the nature of the situation, sorry there is nothing else I can recommend other than to just buy a new model which is readily available from most shops and online.

The wheels for the new locomotive are the same diameter but literally every other component has changed making the replacement parts incompatible in this case.

N / Re: Tightest radius for a Bachmann MDT Plymouth ?
October 15, 2017, 03:17:21 AM
I got out a piece of flex track and tested mine out and found that it ran fine on 9.75" radius, but as the radius got smaller the derailments became more frequent. The sharpest I tried was about 7" and could not get it to stay on track very long. Your results may vary... I would be weary of trying anything much sharper than 7 or 8 inches as the loco may run fine on 6" as Fred experienced or it may not.

In the future you can try to give yourself more leeway in the future in case of derailments or other accidents. (That is leave more space between the track and the edge of that layout). You can also install some sort of barrier like plexi-glass or plastic along the sides as well. Good luck finding your parts.

Hi I'm after the set of 8 drive wheels for DC daylight as most of my plastic shafts have worn.
I see the have the later DCC model wheels available .Im just wondering if the same?
No the parts are not inter-compatible unfortunately, and the parts you seek are not available. Your best bet is likely to upgrade to a new model. The only source for parts would be to cannibalize another locomotive for parts from ebay, a fleamarket, or a train show. The problem is with these locomotives being produced over 30 years ago now, most of them that you will find will probably be worn out and the plastic and other parts just won't be as reliable any more due to their age. There likely is no cheap fix for your issue, because you may find an engine to salvage the replacement parts off of, but that is only a temporary fix and will probably leave you back where you started a year from now when that part or some other part of the locomotive fails or needs replacement or repair.

A picture is worth a thousand words. You can use your favorite image hosting site to share a photo. Without more information I can't give you any specific help.
I will say that many older Bachmann locomotives are not worth converting as the newer models are much nicer quality overall, and have very nice detail and run much better and they often come with DCC and sometimes with sound installed as well. If you are a novice to DCC installs then depending on the locomotive it may not be best to attempt to install DCC by yourself straight away.
Generally speaking if you do try to install DCC it is key to make sure to isolate the motor from the frame and to be keen to keep track of where each wire is supposed to go to if it has a board. Most older locomotives are not DCC ready and will require a hardwired install so the ability to use a soldering iron/gun will be necessary.
Sorry I can't help you anymore specifically without more info.

Nickel-Silver has better conductivity than Steel after oxidation. You can use them together but I suggest you use Nickel-Silver as the Steel needs to be cleaned more frequently and is not as conductive after oxidation.

You can always splice the wires into a modern connector if necessary or solder your own connections whichever is easiest for you.

I intend to strip this down and add as many B&O specific details as possible.
Out of curiosity did the B&O locomotive you are trying to model burn oil or coal? I think I may have a spare Vanderbilt or Hicken tender somewhere if you need one.

Are there any better-quality 611 models out there? I know they'll have to be in HO scale, like either the Broadway Limited or MTH models, or higher
In N scale you have Bachmann or Brass
For HO scale you have Bachmann, MTH, BLI or Brass
For O scale you have MTH, Lionel or Brass
Some of the brass manufacturers of J's include Max Gray, Sunset, Williams, Overland, Key Imports and GEM
Once you get larger than HO scale things get very expensive and larger than O scale is even more expensive yet
This is an example of an HO brass model

If you are looking for a currently or recently produced model that is not too scarce, as well as something not super expensive, that is pretty good quality then I would suggest sticking to HO scale and one of BLI, MTH or Bachmann.

Presuming you are trying to install DCC in an old HO scale 2-10-4. My advice is to just buy a newer model that comes with DCC if you can find one. They usually are available for around $100-150.

Currently produced options in HO scale include
BLI $400 DCC & Sound
MTH $500 DCS & Sound
Bachmann $430 DCC & Sound
Often times you can get Bachmann models at a discount from retailers like MB Klein which has the Bachmann model on offer for only $250 which is nearly half off of the MSRP.
I personally have two Bachmann HO scale class J locomotives, one came with an auxiliary water tender, neither have sound. In my experience they run fine, but might be a bit lacking in pulling power so some extra lead weight goes a long way to improving performance. I don't have a BLI or MTH J so I can't comment on those specifically.

I have a HO Acela with dcc on board and would like to add sound.
What would be the best and easiest speaker to use and where would be the best place to install it
Honestly the only normally audible sounds it makes are the bell and horn for the most part. No one makes a specific decoder for it. I would not recommend installing sound just for a bell and horn.

All that trouble for a picture.
It is so simple if our moderators would switch it on.
Simple machines software has the possibility to add attachments to the text.
But for some reason Mr.B's helpers has switched it off.
There is a good reason that it is turned off; namely because it costs a lot of money for them to have adequate space for everyone to host a lot of high resolution photographs and videos. The feature was disabled when I was fairly new to the forum over ten years ago now, but when I first started reading posts on here you could still actually attach your photos but there was a maximum file size back then for attachments, so the photos could not be very big or high resolution.

If you would like to provide funding to the forum to attach photos here I am sure Bachmann would be glad to "switch it on" for you.

Any NMRA compliant decoder that fits in the allotted space will work.
