Hi all,

I meant to post this thread, but the Bachmann forum does not handle the images like I thought, If you are interested in how I TURNED THIS;

INTO THIS;

General Discussion / A short video and a fun pic...

Hi all,

Here is an image of what happened when I put the family pet on the Carlsburg Station, an HO structure I just finished. The photo is unretouched.

And here is a two minute video of model trains passing each other.

Got three minutes to spare?

This should mellow you out if you need a break from doing the taxes.

A "poorly" connected rail joiner can create a resistance between the adjacent rails.

The basic electrical rule (Ohms law) is E=I/R.
E=Voltage (pressure pushing the electricity)
I=Current (amount of electricity in amperes)
R= Resistance (amount of obstruction to electrical flow in Ohms)

This explains why a poor connection causes a voltage drop that can slow or even stop a locomotive.

Adequate power distribution through the layout is paramount to trouble free operation as there will be minimal voltage changes as locomotives move through the rail system.

Hope this helps or ask for more information.

Yes, I think it does...

No maybe not.

So the EZ is 1 amp and the NCE is 2 amps, and the 2 amps are more likely to cause a voltage drop, which reveals a poor connection.

What part of Ohms law is represented by the extra amp?    I  ???

Wouldn't higher amps/constant resistance equal greater voltage?

The additional 1a of power will not make a difference, unless you increase the load on the circuit.

If you have a joint (Electrically) that is weak it will show up with increased load.

What would increase the load? More Locos? Fewer Locos? Faster Locos?

Why would a weak link show up with an increased load? I would think that would mean more power for the link. Maybe that means more power seeking the ground?

See what I mean when I say I don't "get" it?

Thanks for your quick response Tim.  whether I understand it or not, this sounds like no big deal.

Hi All,

I got the new NCE Power Cab. My plan is to use it to upgrade from the Bachmann EZ Commander I've used and enjoyed for a few years.

In the documentation, NCE recommends a drop for every piece of track, stating, "Do not rely on rail joiners to handle 2 amps" or words to that effect. I don't fully understand that because I don't "get" electricity.

If my power is good now, and it is, with the 1 amp Bachmann system,  won't it be even better with 2 amps coursing thru the same circuit?

???

I guess I'm being proactively curious here, because I haven't even hooked up the power cab to the layout yet.

If fact, anyone with experience with these system could offer helpful info would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

That's the old TYCO kit, right?   It looks real nice.

Yes it was quite a find. It was in an unmarked box, with no instructions. The seller said "Tyco" and it was stamped POLA, GERMANY on one of the sprues.

5 bucks.

Thanks for taking a peek.

I concur with Tim. It should work. I have two loops that are joined with a couple of turnouts, but they are insulated, and everything works correctly.

I have with good results... 1/2 on 16" center joists... The "joists" were 2x4"

I found it very good to work with.

Thanks guys....

I will do all the things mentioned,,, except maybe the plexiglass, good idea, but no time to set it up.  :'(

This coming Sunday I’m doing something I’ve never done before. I have rented table space at the Gratiot Valley Train Show. I would like you all to stop by and see my display which will be titled “Dream Layouts by Engineer Kyle”

http://www.gvrr.org/3-07f.htm

Here’s the thing;

I don’t exactly know what I’m doing, so I am asking you all for any advice you can give. Please take a moment to read my plan listed below, and share with me any ideas you might have that will lead to a successful and satisfying day.

1.)   I’ve taken the 17 modules (structures and scenery) that are not glued down off my layout. I’ll display them on the table. I must come up with some type of lightweight shelf structure that I can put on the table so I can get the pieces on three levels. I have yards of black cloth I can use to dress things up.
2.)   Each piece will be accompanied by a couple of 8x10 glossies that will show how they look on the layout.
3.)   No prices will be listed, only a small tag for each item with a number, the number of hours I worked on it.
4.)   I’ll have about 100 trees half made up. I’ll have some spray and WS foam handy, and will show the passersby how to make their own foliage, and give them away, 20 per hour, on the hour.
5.)   I have a backdrop half painted, and will work on it to pass the time. I’ve also got some BB kits I can put together.
6.)   I’ll have my 10 year old son with me to help out.

I don’t really know where this will lead; I mostly want to promote the hobby and show off my stuff, sort of an exhibition/clinic.

Any thoughts please?
