When you do, make it a Vanderbilt to go with a Seaboard Q-3 Mikado:

Thanks Lee!  I think it's isolated, but I'll go back and put a meter on it to make sure.

Is the "L-Shaped" mounting bracket just a bracket or does it also serve as a path for electricity?  Does it need to be isolated from the board if not used as an electrical path?

The decals are from Microscale.  I had to use 2 sets as the stripe from one is not long enough.

I generally run 1 train at a time and running the E7 by itself the sound is fine.  When running 2 PS2 trains the noise is sufficient enough that it's hard to distinguish either engine unless you're standing next to it.

I'd like to eventually put PS2 in my E7, but that's a future project.  I have a 2-80 steamer that needs it bad!

Vern,

I put a MRC AC Sounder in my WBB E7 also:

Sounds just fine!

This started as a Southern unit.  I stripped the paint, re-painted it in Seaboard Mint Green/Dark Green, and applied new decals.  I also installed an ERR Cruise Commander module in it and runs fine.

The SAL diesel switchers were red/black, you can just see my MTH NW2 just behind the repainted WBB E7:

It's a very nice paint scheme, one WBB ought to do right on future SAL switchers.

What Dominic said.

I was using the first setup he mentioned, but from what I understand, using a TPC300 or TPC 400 will give you finer (slower) control over your engines.  Please correct me if I'm in error.

The 1st setup would cost maybe $200 (transformer, PowerMaster, Cab1) if you had to go buy all 3 pieces (plus you need a cable from the transformer to the PowerMaster).

Lionel has discontinued support for the TMCC system in favor of their Legacy system, so the PowerMaster and CAB-1 are getting harder to find.  I have since bought the MTH DCS system, which also runs conventional engines (I have 3 MTH DCS/PS2 engines and 3 Conventional engines).

Sherwood,
I mounted the stock MRC speaker on a 1-1/2" cardboard tube/baffle and mounted that inside the engine on top of the metal underframe.  I used hot glue to do the job.  The speaker is pointing up, I cut a notch in the cardboard for the wires.

With the metal grille openings on the E7 the sound has a good escape route.  The horn and whistle are surprisingly loud, the diesel rumble is not as loud but still loud enough to hear as the engine with 5 passenger cars goes around the layout.

From what I've read on other forums, a baffle will help no matter what side of the speaker face it's on.  It keeps the sound from the back cancelling out the sound from the front.

I wish MRC would sell the speakers separately, I'd replace a couple of speakers in some older MTH engines.

Here's my WBB E7 in Seaboard Air Line paint:

I also put an ERR Cruise Commander module inside and a MRC AC Sounder kit to give it some life.  I also put LED headlights in it and built a semi-scale cab with crew.

When I saw this thread the first thing I thought of was...I wonder if 2" foam board covered with fiberglass would work and how much it would weigh?

Kinda like a surfboard only bigger!  The price of fiberglass and resin might deter most folks, but it would be an alternative  ;)

StationMaster12,

I don't have any others that are worthy enough to post.  I really need to get on the ball and finish ballasting my track and get some photos up later.

Dominic,

I know PRR had an influence on SAL, but I don't know about this particular paint scheme.  I really like the Mint Green with Red striping and Dark Green roof, the "Citrus" scheme was even more appealing.

None of the southern RRs have ever been covered as they should and I believe the manufacturers are missing out on a great many sales because of it.

I model (you guessed it) the Seaboard Air Line and just about everything I have has to be modified, repainted, or built from scratch.  It's becoming harder to do even this as parts and (primarily) decals become harder to find.

I would like to see the manufacturers solicit more input from folks down south, instead of relying on input from train shows that take place outside of the area.  Putting in survey forms in boxes or even a survey form online would be a good sign.

I've shown this on other forums, but here's my Williams E7 I repainted/lettered for Seaboard Air Line:

While I'm focused on the RR prior to the merger with ACL, anything on ACL.SAL.SCL would be welcome, especially if it was a piece that could be painted/lettered to cover all 3.

Well,

I went to order the Mogul at MicroMark and it's backordered  :( so I'm holding off until I see they have one actually in stock  ::)
