General Discussion / My layout and the future
April 14, 2019, 03:22:32 PM
I just wanted to give shout out to all the folks here on the Bachmann board and the Bach Man who I've had the pleasure of interacting with over the years. I've enjoyed our conversations and I'm glad I had this place to talk trains.
After all this planning and playing around with my layout, I finally gave myself a reality check and asked myself what I was doing. I'm not going to go forward with it.
I've been in denial and having a hard time coming to terms with the inevitable. A couple of weeks ago the doc diagnosed me with severe emphysema. I was in the hospital for a couple days last month with exacerbation of COPD. After I got out, I had to go see a respiratory specialist. He said I'm at the the final stage of emphysema and all he can do is give me meds to try to slow it down. Apparently, it's a matter of months not years.
I'll keep checking in here. If you don't see my posts anymore, then you know my time has come.
It's been fun.

General Discussion / Reworking the layout
April 06, 2019, 01:26:22 PM
I started redoing my layout. I got HO stuff on the oval and upper point-to-point right now because my grandson is bringing my great grandson down today and he likes to watch the trains. I just hooked up the DC power to the oval for now. I'll set up for the On30 after they leave.
It took me a lot of experimenting with different track pieces to get the wye right in the space I had to work with. I had to go outside the box and using a crossing with it. I didn't have the crossing so I hard to order it and got it yesterday. I already have the reversing unit. I've got an "S" in there but it couldn't be helped.
Now that I have this part figured out, I'll have to get some foam to put the extension on the right side so I can connect the bottom track with top track. It will go behind the "mountains". I'm going to have to lower the right side top track some. I haven't figured out the measurements for the grade yet.

General Discussion / 3 Mile long consist
March 03, 2019, 04:27:28 PM
I wonder how many cars this could pull if needed. Imagine if you wanted a particular loco from the middle how many you would have to move.

General Discussion / Nomenclature question.
February 01, 2019, 11:17:34 AM
Bachmann makes the Bridge 'N Trestle set 46225. Since it has a bridge and it's called bridge and trestle, are the piers considered the trestle? Or, is the bridge consider the trestle? If so, then why not call it trestle and pier set? Or, is the flat piece the track is on the "bridge" and the super structure the "trestle"?

People have been posting pics here of places in Missouri that used to have roundhouses. The aerial shots show the foot prints left behind.

General Discussion / Old time traction
December 10, 2018, 06:42:31 PM
Someone just posted this on a St. Louis Facebook site that I'm on. It's from 1909 at Broadway and Lucas in St. Louis.  The caption said 1909 but someone else said it might be later than that.

General Discussion / Christmas layout begins
November 06, 2018, 12:49:05 PM
I'm starting on the Christmas layout now. I will change things up somewhat from last year. I bought another reversing set up and a Thomas set. I'll use Thomas and one of the cars on the reversing track that will run along the back ledge.
I'm not going to use the snow blankets close to the track again. I spent hours pulling strands fake snow from train axles. I'll paint some of the foam stuff white and I have some solid white shelf liner to use in some places like to cover the risers.
This is what I'm starting with this year -

This is from last year -

General Discussion / Bradford Exhange trestle
October 21, 2018, 01:05:15 PM
You said 65' to 75' between the bents. I would think it would have to be longer than that because of the length of the loco, tender, and car in the pic. Car is 9" and loco and tender are 11" with standard tender. If it is a shorter tender as it looks, maybe take an inch off? That's still 19". If you centered them on the trestle, they would overhang the last bent on each side.
From the other thread:
"In HO:
65 scale feet X 12 = 780" / 87 = 8.9655" long
75 scale feet X 12 = 900" / 87 = 10.345" long"

I asked them: "Your ad for the Budweiser train says it's a 2-6-0 but the picture shows a 4-6-0. Which is it?"
They said: "I can confirm the advertisement is correct. It will be 2-6-0."
I told them: "Your ad (On30 Scale HO-Gauge Track Accessory Set) says the set includes "9 inch radius curves". Those are 18" radius curves."
They said: "...I have forwarded your comments to the department involved..."
I asked them: "Can you tell how long the track is on this bridge (Timber Trestle Bridge Train Accessory)?"
They said: "I am very sorry, I do not have the product information you requested. All of our products are backed by our generous return policy, if you are not fully satisfied."

General Discussion / Removing snow from the snow plow
September 17, 2018, 04:44:52 PM
I got caught up watching other Youtube videos after watching Ray's. This snow plow one has me wondering. Wouldn't it just be easier and quicker for someone with a backhoe or a bulldozer to remove the snow? Their rocket powered play toy is neat but it doesn't seem to be that efficient.
(After I originally posted this, I went back and read some of the comments. It seems others have the same thoughts about it's inefficiency.)

Here's a video from June '97 when we traveled out West. I had been wanting to visit this place for a long, long time and finally got the opportunity to see Jupiter and #119. I know they aren't the originals.
Golden Spike National Historic Site. I also have some video from when we went and traveled the old road bed for a ways outside of the historic site. I have to get that edited yet.
