On30 / Micro-Mark HO Truck Tuner
December 01, 2017, 04:37:59 PM
Will the Micro-Mark HO Truck Tuner work with On30 trucks? I'm guessing it will but want to make sure. I lost the one I used to have and I'm ordering another one. I just never thought about whether the On30 axles were the same size as HO axles. I guess they would be. I have never seen any On30 truck tuners anywhere so I guess I'm answering my own question.

General Discussion / Christmas layout
November 26, 2017, 05:02:59 PM
I just planned out my Christmas layout using AnyRail. I've never actually planned one out like this before. I usually just do it on the fly (or on the rail? :))
With the discussions lately About figure 8's, I figured I'd go ahead and do one. It goes up on the right and down on the left. It's a 4% grade so I'll to see what loco works best.
This is a mixture of 15" and 18" radius. I got it to all fit together using the short fitter pieces in a couple of places. The tree will go in the middle of the oval on the right. I'm thinking my new On30 Porter with maybe a flat and caboose on the oval. The trolley will be on the lower point-to-point section. I have my new On30 Heisler to try out on the figure 8 or I might just do the 2-6-0 with Christmas cars on the 8.

General Discussion / E-Z Track quick reference list
November 12, 2017, 01:30:46 PM
6/4/2018 - I just modified this to include the "number of degrees of a circle" on the curve pieces.
In working with AnyRail, I found that I could use a list of all the E-Z track HO pieces and their product numbers without looking at them piece by piece since AnyRail just lists the product numbers on the side panel. I compiled this so it would be easier for me.

General Discussion / Photos that make you go "Hmm..."

A photo by James Belmont on the Railroad Fools Facebook page. Is this a "crossing in progress" or has the track with the siding been abandoned? http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/board/index.php?action=post;board=1.0

General Discussion / Overton cars
October 03, 2017, 12:34:56 PM
What is the difference between an Overton passenger car and a Bachmann old time passenger car? The length? The way the clerestory is shaped?
I'm just curious because I don't know what makes an Overton an Overton.  Was Overton a person who designed them or a company or a place where they were made?
A Wikipedia search on "Overton" doesn't yield much useful except for the Texas connection.
Overton, Texas was meant to be crossroads for two railroads. In 1875, the Henderson and Overton Branch Railroad was built and was later joined by the International-Great Northern.

General Discussion / Creating textured surfaces

I happened upon this site while looking for something else. The guy does some really neat modeling in creating detailed surfaces like interior and exterior building walls and ground cover.

General Discussion / Dinosaurland
August 13, 2017, 01:19:41 PM
I've got a side project I just started until I get started on the layout -Dinosaurland 2. My great granddaughter likes dinosaurs as did my two grand kids when they were little. I had built them one some 15 years ago or so but it has been passed around to other kids and was showing it's age.  .
I have a lot of foam pieces leftover from previous railroads and I've learned from mistakes I made with the old one.
I'm pretty much just building a layout without the track.

Maybe someone from around St. Louis can help on this. This was somewhere in the St. Louis area. I don't know where or when. I'm trying to figure out where it was. 60's or 70's? The negative is reversed. The loco is 400.

General Discussion / Where am I?
May 10, 2017, 09:17:15 PM
Maybe one of the old timers can help me with this. Back in 1970, when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, a buddy and I went to a place that had some locos outside. It would have been LA, San Diego, or somewhere in between. I didn't get up to Sacramento or close to there.
I looked at a couple of sites on the web but I couldn't find places whose locos had numbers that corresponded to the numbers I saw. Does anyone know where this was?
Here are the 4 pics I have.

#131
This has probably been posted at some point and I just don't recall seeing it.
I'm going to try to scratch build some things for my On30 layout and I needed dimensions for things.
With the HO dimensions, I can convert it to On30 with these charts.

HO / screw and washer sizes for old time chassis
March 17, 2017, 04:34:48 PM
Here's the situation:
I used an old time HO chassis under my On30 trolley conversion to tourist car. I want to light it.
I bought Athearn Genesis 70 ton prewired trucks to make it easier for me. The hole in the trucks was too small for the Bachmann bolster. I reamed the hole in the trucks so they fit over the bolster. They sit too far down on the bolster and the wheels rub the truss rods.
I can put washers on the bolster to raise it off the truck. Does anyone know what size inside diameter washer I need? I have some Kadee gray washers (#209) and the holes are much too small. I think those holes are 1/8". I'm wondering if a 3/16" hole would be big enough. Does anyone know?
If I use washers, I might need longer screws. The Bachmann screws work with the new trucks but I can't screw them all the way in. I'm worried that they might not be long enough when I start adding washers. Does anyone know what size screws those are if I have to buy longer ones?
I looked at Bachmann's product diagrams and they only list part numbers for screws, not sizes.

On30 / O scale people
March 07, 2017, 03:49:24 PM
Does anyone know how Bachmann's O scale Seated Platform Passengers (33161) compare in size to Woodland Scenics' Seated People (#2731) or Model Power's O scale Sitting People with benches (#6052)?
I had the Woodland Scenics people and they fit in my trolley tourist car ok. I got the Model Power O scale people to put in the trolley, too, but they are much bigger than the WS ones and look too big in the car. I figured I could use the MP benches outside.
The Bachmann one's look a little more contemporary than I wanted but I'd buy a set of those if they are sized like WS and not too big like MP people.
I want to have more than 5 people in the car.

On30 / Heisler dimensions
February 08, 2017, 12:42:49 AM
Does anyone know the dimensions of the On30 Heisler?
I'm probably going to buy one for my new layout. I'm trying to work out the clearances I will need for bridges and tunnels.
I know the 2 truck Shay is 7L 1 7/8W 3H. The Climax is 7 1/8L 2W 3H. 8 wheel Bobber caboose is 5L 2W 3H.
I found those on an old site that was done before the Heisler came out.

General Discussion / Going to try a new layout
January 29, 2017, 12:20:10 AM
Since I took the Christmas layout down, I'm going to try something different while I still have the board up.
I'm thinking of either the trolley going back and forth between buildings on the upper and lower levels or maybe some type of logging or mining. I'm thinking On30 but I'm not sure yet. I might do it in HO.
I'm glad my great granddaughter had her Legos over here that I could use for supports so I could get an idea of what I would do.

General Discussion / Extension wire
November 12, 2016, 12:26:04 PM
I need an extension wire for my Bachmann auto reverse controller between the track and controller.
Does Bachmann make these? I couldn't find any listed.
If not, any ideas besides cutting and splicing more wire into the existing wire coming from the terminal track section?
I cringe at the thought of trying to do that. There appear to be 4 wires within that black wire.

General Discussion / Christmas layouts
October 27, 2016, 12:07:43 PM
I'm starting out on my Christmas display now.
Since I have all these health issues now, I'm giving myself more time. I was doing Bachmann On30 and HO trains but the past few years I've kept it pretty simple with just an O27 loop. I'm going to get more elaborate this year with a Bachmann HO train and a couple of Bachmann trolleys and an O27 loop around it all.
I was able to get my displays online now. I've rounded up all the pics I could find. There are a few years missing and I can't remember if I had a train around the tree those years. My wife said there's a couple of years that I didn't.

On30 / On30 trolley DCC
September 01, 2016, 04:45:03 PM
Is there a company that will install a decoder in an On30 trolley? It seems like there was one a few years that would install decoders in non-DCC Bachmann products but I can't remember the name.
I want to use the reverse loop modules with an On30 trolley on my Christmas layout.
I already have the point to point reverse set for the brill trolley, but I'd like to do the On30 trolley with a loop on each end and one track connecting them.
#139
Well this sure bites the big one.  I just received this in the mail today (brand new from The Favorite Spot) and set it up and it doesn't reverse. It reversed one time at the power pack end and wouldn't do it again. It never would reverse at the other end.
I've been messing with Bachmann track for a long time and used to have the set up with the barn so I know I have it all connected right.
I guess it's going to be "Call Bachmann" right?

General Discussion / Just stopped by to say "hi".
August 10, 2016, 12:56:46 PM
It looks like it's been over a year since I posted on here and haven't checked in here in a long time. I just wanted say "hi" to everyone. I've pretty much hung up my railroading spurs.
I did a Lionel set-up around the tree last year but that's it.  I might try to do something Bachmann for Christmas this year to go with the Lionel. I'm thinking trolley. I don't know how much longer I can do Christmas set ups because it's real hard doing a lot of bending over now.  I have some of my old time Bachmann stuff set up on a ledge around the dining room.
I'm sorry to see Lee Riley passed. I'm sure the Bachmann community in particular and model railroading in general is so much the poorer without him.
I'm not doing so good health wise. I'm on oxygen full time now with COPD so I can't be very active anymore. I did it to myself with all those years of smoking. I have to use a cane if I have walk any distance. I have degenerative disk disease.  I have to wear hearing aids sometimes now.  I wear reading glasses now. It's hell getting old.
I have two great grand kids now, one by each of my grand kids. (the new great grandson less than a month ago). I see my 2 year old great grand daughter often and she is a true pleasure in my life.
