Title: Issues with Bachmann EMD GP40 DIESEL
Post by: padrehokie1985 on December 18, 2024, 09:34:45 AM
Hi! I am new here but have a frustrating question for you guys. I had a EMD GP40 Diesel from years back and it used to work great, but when I pulled it out to put around the christmas tree I could not get it to run. I did the typical fixes, check the tracks, make sure wheels are alinged, clean tracks etc, but nothing worked. I took it apart and it looked like on of the gears had broken in the wheels. Ok no problem I find the same one online and I put it on my tracks. Now it runs, barely, as I need to crank it up close to the highest power to get it to move and there is this clicking sound. I have no idea what is up and any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!

A 'clicking sound' is usually the symptom of old, dry, grease on a gear tooth, or a crack in a gear. Did you clean the gear teeth and apply fresh grease when you replaced the wheel set? And did you inspect the other gears for any cracks?

Thank you! I have not done either because this one is "brand new" so I will be bummed if it has the same issues as my old one. Will report back

What Len is trying to tell you is that if you found one cracked gear there may be others. Look carefully at all of them.
